NFL Eastern Divisions Offseason Needs by Noah and Max Radio
Buffalo Bills
The Bills just came off of one of their best seasons in a while. Dynamic Duo Josh Allen and Stefon Diggs led their team to the AFC Championship where they lost 38-24 to the Chiefs. They are going to need to have a solid offseason to be a contender next year, mainly because of their need for a running back. Josh Allen handled most of the running for the Bills in 2020, but in order for Allen to be their long-term quarterback, they need somebody to pound on the ground. Former Green Bay Packers running back Aaron Jones’ contract is up, and they could look to sign him. But they could also go the other way, and try to draft a running back like Travis Etienne with the 30th pick in the draft.
New England Patriots
The Patriots are in a big rebuilding mode after losing Tom Brady last year and acquiring Cam Newton. They will most likely try to sign skill position players on offense to surround Newton, or they could go the other way and look for a different franchise quarterback. One of their biggest needs on defense is at the linebacker position. The only mildly recognizable player at the position is Dont’a Hightower and looking back at their season, he is the only one who performed. It’s going to be a tough decision in the draft because they have the 15th pick. They could go for offensive players, or take a linebacker like Micah Parsons to strengthen the defense. Look for some moves in the Patriots organization this spring and summer.
New York Jets
Cap space is what the Jets have, but they have endless possibilities this offseason. With the second pick in the draft, they could acquire a new leader at quarterback like Zach Wilson or Justin Fields. They could also trade down in the draft to get skill position players or more of a veteran quarterback. The Jets have the 23rd and 34th picks of the draft, allowing them to look for a talented running back or a stellar defensive player. They also have the 66th pick and could take a decent tight end like Pat Freiermuth. Their defense is pretty good but has a few holes and they could try to sign players like Matt Judon or Kevin King.
Miami Dolphins
The Dolphins are in for an eventful offseason. They have Tua Tagovailoa locked down through 2023 so they might as well find him some weapons. With the third and eighteenth picks in the draft, that is definitely possible. They could try to protect Tua with the third pick and take Penei Sewell, or take more of a playmaker in Devonte Smith or even Kyle Pitts. With the 18th pick, they should move to the opposite position. If they took a lineman third, they should take a playmaker 18th or vice versa. The Dolphins defense turned around last year, flipping their turnover margin from -10 to +10. They don’t really need defensive players like they do offensive this season. What has been talked about with Miami is a trade with the Houston Texans for Deshaun Watson. The Texans have repeatedly said that they will not trade Watson, clearly because he is an amazing player. Tua Tagovailoa has said, “I’m the Dolphins’ quarterback,” but seems to be open to a change.
Washington Football Team
In the 2020-21 season, Washington barely snuck into the playoffs then proceeded to lose in the first round. With Dak Prescott likely going to be ready for next season, they need some work if they want to win the division again. They should first turn to their own team and re-sign some of their free agents. It looks like they will not be able to pay offensive guard Brandon Scherff enough to keep him on the roster. Only two defensive starters are headed to free agency, defensive end Ryan Kerrigan and cornerback Ronald Darby. They will unfortunately lose a slew of backup linebackers. They should try to re-sign most of these players. They are in a good position to do so with the fifth-most cap space in the league. In the draft, they could potentially select a quarterback such as Mac Jones with their 19th overall pick in the first round. They could also go the route of Kyle Trask on day two or acquire someone in free agency. The final position they need to look at is the offensive line. Losing Brandon Scherff is a large blow but as with the quarterback, they can address it in the draft or look to free agency.
Dallas Cowboys
The first thing the Cowboys need to do this offseason is call up Dak Prescott and pay him as much money as he asks for. Even though he hasn’t taken the Cowboys deep into the playoffs he is still one of the most important parts of the team. Deshawn Watson hasn’t won a championship and he is influencing the Texans organization like he is Tom Brady with seven championships. With Prescott hurt the Cowboys went from being a contender in the NFC to being out of the playoffs. Of course there were other players who were banged up, including Ezekiel Elliot, but there is a much bigger drop-off in talent from starting quarterback to backup quarterback than there is at other positions. Another smart move would be to address the defensive secondary. They have three key defensive backs set to hit the open market this offseason and it wouldn’t be jaw-dropping to see all three of them walk. If that occurs they could potentially take cornerback Patrick Surtain or Caleb Farley with the tenth pick in the draft. They could also go the route of Kyle Pitts or a different receiver and take safety Trevon Moehrig in the second round. Although, no one knows what the Cowboys front office is thinking during a normal year so their thought process will without a doubt be more twisted than a plate of spaghetti on draft day this year. The Cowboys have many needs but these two are the most glaring.
Philadelphia Eagles
The Eagles have already been active this offseason by trading Carson Wentz. He was beat out by a rookie so clearly, he had to go but shipping him off for a third-round pick and a conditional second-rounder was a little bit overzealous. They just shipped off their franchise quarterback for two picks when they could have gotten a better offer from a team like the Panthers or even the 49ers in a potential quarterback swap. According to ESPN’s Tim McManus, the Eagles were, “Not thrilled” with the outcome of the trade. Various sources reported that they were looking for a first-round pick but the best they could get was a conditional second-rounder. Another problem with the trade is that now Jalen Hurts is the only quarterback signed through the 2021 season. With that in mind, it is not if they will acquire a quarterback it is when, how, and which one. It looks unlikely that Zach Wilson will fall to them at number six, he will probably go number two regardless of whether the Jets trade down or not. Another option is to acquire veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick in free agency. The Eagles aren’t only short on quarterbacks, they have a slew of players set to hit free agency this offseason, including safety Jalen Mills and offensive tackle Jason Peters. Even though they should prioritize making moves outside of the organization but it wouldn’t hurt them to re-sign a few of their seven starters that could leave the team. One more thing they should address is acquiring a true number one receiver. They could pick Devonta Smith or Ja’Marr Chase with their number six overall pick or acquire someone like Allen Robinson or A.J. Green through free agency. Larry Fitzgerald and T.Y. Hilton would also be good options in free agency. After a 4-11-1 season, they certainly have a lot of work to do this offseason.
New York Giants
The Giants need so much help I don’t even know where to start. Since 2018 they have had only six pro bowl selections which is a very low number for a team. There were very few bright spots on the team this year with Saquan Barkley out for nearly the whole season but James Bradberry and Dalvin Tomlinson did the best they could. Bradberry was selected to the pro bowl and Tomlinson showed flashes of dominance. He had 49 tackles in 2020 and eight tackles for loss. Moving to the offensive side, with Daniel Jones now locked in at quarterback, they should get him some weapons. They could attract the attention of T.Y. Hilton or Allen Robinson in free agency. They could also attempt to draft Kyle Pitts or another playmaker with the 11th pick in the draft. Another possibility for that pick is Patrick Surtain or Caleb Farley who could add to a secondary that is just a step away from being elite. That could make for a great group with Jabrill Peppers, Logan Ryan, and Julian Love. One final move they should make is picking up an edge rusher. Whether they toy with their cap space and bring in J.J. Watt or take someone to the likes of Gregory Rousseau in the draft, it needs to be done. The Giants clearly aren’t in “win now” mode but they have the potential to be a decent team in the coming years.
