The Bests From MLB in 2024 So Far by Marshall Laskowski
The MLB is getting into full swing right now and there have been many great moments and players so far. I will be writing about some of the best things so far such as player, game, and a few others.
Player: The best player so far in this 2024 season has been Mookie Betts. We knew he was going to be great this year but even for him this is another level of play that we have never seen him at. He leads the MLB in batting average with a .377 batting average, he has 6 home runs which is great, and already has 46 hits which is incredible (these stats are as of April 30th). This is all coming when he is learning a whole new position since he is playing shortstop. Mookie is playing great and he probably won’t slow down.
Game: This one I might be a bit biased on but I think that the Mariners and Braves played the game of the year on April 29th. The Mariners ended up winning this game 2-1 on a walkoff 2 run home run by Mitch Garver. Both of the pitchers carried a no-hitter late into the game. Bryce Miller for the Mariners had a perfect game going late and his no-hitter got broken up in the seventh inning. Max Fried for the Braves had a no-hitter going into the eighth inning. The Braves got a run on an Ozzie Albies double in the seventh. Then as mentioned earlier the Mariners won on a walkoff homer by Mitch Garver after they got a runner on base. This was the ultimate pitchers duel and a great game.
Pitcher: There have been a lot of injuries for pitchers this year so some of the top options like Spencer Strider and Gerrit Cole aren’t available so I would say the best has been Shota Imanaga. He got paid lots of money after coming to America from Japan for his first year and has been dominant. He is 5-0 with a 1.08 ERA and 43 strikeouts (as of May 8th). He has some of the best stats in the league and has been great for the Cubs this year and hopefully he can continue it.
Play: Cedric Mullins has been one of the best defenders in the MLB for years now and he has been good again in center field. This play on Jackie Robinson day was an amazing catch when he went all out for the ball. Cedric Mullins Catch
He dove backwards and stuck his glove out for the best catch of the year.
Team: We knew the Dodgers were going to be great this year after spending nearly 1 billion dollars in the offseason but they are performing up to if not over those expectations. After starting out a bit slow they have been getting great production out of Shohei Ohtani, Mookie Betts, Freddie Freeman, Teoscar Hernandez and more they have caught fire and are now 25-13 (as of May 8th). I also think that they won’t be slowing down anytime soon with the roster they have.
I hope that everybody has a great rest of their MLB season as it is just getting underway and that these players and teams can stay hot.
