Pre-Season Problems for MLB by Austin Strom

The MLB is a few days into spring training 2024 and there are so many problems with the jerseys, the rules, etc. In the first paragraph, we are going to explain why the jerseys are one of the main problems that the 2024 spring training is having. Then we are going to explain why the new rules of MLB are unnecessary and why they are just bad in general.

First, we will explain the jerseys. The jerseys have been bad ever since last year. But this year, they messed up big time. They made the jerseys less creative this year and made them just look bad. For example, they made the jerseys feel airier and lighter. That would help but it would not help because it makes the jerseys look like a replica of the actual jersey which just makes it look fake in many ways. “Any time there’s change, there’s an adjustment period. Sometimes that adjustment period goes well, but not so much. In this instance, there appear to be some misses that could have otherwise not been misses,” Clark recently told The Athletic.”  This quote is saying that it is a 50/50 chance that the uniforms would go well. That would have a huge effect.

As you know, the hat of a baseball team is still part of the uniform. The hats of baseball teams have always been important to baseball history just as much as the jerseys are. But there are some things wrong with the spring training hats this year. For example, baseball hats are MOSTLY the same boring colors. I think they should have changed them up a little bit this year because they did not change anything about them for spring training and even if the hats were different colors, they looked not as good as last year's.

As we all know, the pants also come with the jerseys and the hats, but there is one big problem with them. They made the baseball pants see-through. That has a really bad effect on all the fans and even the players. For example, let's start with the fans. Baseball fans do not want to see through the baseball players' pants. That is also just weird in general. Then there are the players themselves. Baseball players probably do not want to feel uncomfortable in very thin pants for everybody to see. That would also make people feel uncomfortable watching the spring training.

Second, we dive into the rules. First, they changed the width of the runner's lane to first base. The joint Competition Committee voted Thursday to approve a widening of the runner’s lane to include the dirt between the foul line and the infield grass. Second, The committee also voted to reduce the pitch clock allotment by two seconds with runners on base and reduce mound visits by one, amid other minor changes. Many say that these new rule changes are unnecessary and don't need to be made but they are aimed at further improving the pace of play. The pace of play modifications approved by the committee are aimed at getting back some of the seven minutes of average nine-inning game time that were lost by September 2023, compared to the average April game length. The new pitching changes seem to also be a slight change to better the game. If a new pitcher steps onto the warning track with less than 2 minutes remaining on the inning break clock, the clock will reset to 2 minutes, rather than 2:15. Inning breaks that contained a pitching change averaged 2:35 in 2023. Broadcasters are only guaranteed two minutes of commercial time.
