President Obama to Visit Hiroshima by Ben Abel

While in Japan at the G-7 summit, the White House has certified that president Obama will visit Hiroshima.  This will be the first visit by a president there since the atomic bombing of there and Nagasaki at the end of World War II.  Obama actually expressed hope to do this near the beginning of his presidency.  However, many people feel that this would be seen as an apology by the Japanese, or, worse, expressed as one.  The White House feels no need to apologize as there would have been more deaths in a land war, as opposed to the supposedly fewer lives lost in the bombing.  However, documents have been found that suggest that Japan was going to surrender anyway, rendering the bombing unnecessary.  Either way, it is always a good idea to apologize.  This trip is a good idea, no matter what the critics think.
