What Happened On Christmas Day In History? by Sarah Tate
In 1776 George Washington and the Continental Army crossed the Delaware River on Christmas Day.
The year of 1776 was coming to an end, and George Washington wanted to make one last move for the year on the Hessians. No one agreed to this idea. They were all tired from all of the battles they fought that didn’t necessarily turn out for the good.
But they followed their strong leader across the icy river to give the Hessians one last Christmas present. Imagine opening all your Christmas presents and then the next morning you find out that you have another one to open! I’d be shocked until I would soon see that it is a bunch of soldiers coming to fight me.
Washington’s gamble paid off. The Hessians were still a little disoriented from the previous night’s party. The Continental Army defeated the Hessians with minimal blood involved. With Washington’s big score on the board, he had to re-cross the river with his army and the prisoners in tow.
No one really remembers this day accept for Washington and his Army. This was a big day for U.S. history, and it should be remembered.
