On April 8, 2024 there will be a total eclipse between the sun and the moon, this fairly rare event only happens about 2 to 4 per year internationally and in the United States they happen on average every 18-20 months. But why do eclipses happen? Where is the best place to see them? And finally when will this event occur again? All the answers will be in this article. 

What Causes An Eclipse?

Our Moon is massive, it's around a fourth the size of the Earth. The Moon takes up a decent amount of space in our night sky. Our sun is by far much more massive than anything in our solar system. In fact about 1,300,000 Earth sized objects could fill it up! However, since we orbit so far away from the Sun (93 million miles or 150 million kilometers on average.) It seems much smaller. And our moon is closer enough that it can technically block out the sun for a while. On occasion, during the Moon’s orbit around Earth, it moves between the Sun and Earth. When this event occurs, the Moon blocks the light of the Sun. However because the Moon is in an orbit around us it will only block out the Sun for 7-8 minutes. However it still is an incredible sight and attracts tourists. 

Best Places To Avoid And To See The Eclipse 

If you hate being stuck in a crowd then I recommend that you read this, many places in Texas, Indiana and Ohio are predicted to be crowded. Experts say if you want to witness the eclipse alone avoid the cities. And find a place on a mountain top or in an empty field so you can enjoy the eclipse in silence. But if you like being with crowds then experts recommend places such as Houston, Louisville, Columbus, Detroit, Eire, and Pittsburgh. 

When Will We See Something Like This Again?

You can always see an eclipse again internationally in the coming years, however an eclipse in this area will not happen again until 2044.
