At the Pittsburgh Zoo, onlookers watch in wonder at Koda, the zoo’s male polar bear, only 10 years old. He steps out of his cave, shakes his head repeatedly, then retreats back into his home. According to a newsela article I read, it is almost normal for polar bears in zoos to be doing this. It says that 85% of polar bears in zoos do random, repeating things. Laurel Braitman, the author of the book Animal Madness, says that repetitive acting like this is “a signpost of frustration”. In the Arctic, polar bears have thousands of miles they can travel. They might not like being cooped up in a zoo.
So, what is your opinion? Are polar bears in zoos going crazy? Or is it something else? Either way, polar bears in zoos are acting strange.
