It may seem unlikely, but the viral game Pokémon Go, despite its flaws, is helping society in unforeseen ways. For example, Fukushima, Iwate, and Miyagi prefectures in Japan, as well as the Kumamoto prefecture were all hit by powerful earthquakes. In an effort to increase tourism to those areas, Niantic Inc. (the maker of Pokemon Go) had put out an announcement saying that the rare pokemon Lapras would appear more often there. The increased appearances continued until November 23.
