Is Thanksgiving Really a Holiday? By Olive Hollis

November 14, 2024

A holiday according to the Oxford dictionary is a “day of festivities, in which no work is done” but is Thanksgiving really all that festive? Yeah, most people who celebrate go to be with family or have family come over to eat a bunch of food and see each other. But we all know what really happens on Thanksgiving and how it really is not a day for us to celebrate seeing as the Americans who came over weren’t the nicest to the people that they encountered in America…

But anyway, you could eat food with your family and friends on any weekend that lines up with everyone's schedules. But you know who made Thanksgiving a holiday? Abraham Lincoln!!

I have to admit Lincoln did make some pretty great decisions, but nonetheless, he made Thanksgiving a holiday, which meant people went hundreds of years without Thanksgiving, so I propose that we rename the day National Turkey Day! See? You can keep the whole turkey thing but it’s just not a holiday.

Anyway, getting back to the meaning of a holiday, it says that it’s a day of festivities and no work. Most of the time you don’t have to go to work or school on Thanksgiving, so I guess that part of the definition is true, but is Thanksgiving actually all that festive? Yeah sure you eat food with loved ones and you might put on some football game here and there. Now I’m not saying that Thanksgiving isn’t festive or worthy of being a holiday. I’m saying that in my opinion Thanksgiving just doesn’t quite seem like a true holiday.

And do you see a bunch of turkey blow up in your yard? No. Do you see a bunch of Thanksgiving decorations other than sparkly leaves in bright colors? Not really, no. And what else is associated with Thanksgiving other than eating, meeting up with family, and football? Not much!
