Should students get a longer lunch? by Aparna Anand

Many students feel that lunch is the best time to socialize with their friends, especially if they’re on the opposite grade-level team. It is also a great way to take a break from our classes and refuel so we can tackle the rest of our day. But having a longer lunch is a controversial topic, since teachers will face a problem trying to cram in lessons in a shorter span of time. So how will we find the best solution that pleases both students and teachers?

One solution is to find a more efficient way to operate the cafeteria lunch line system. Waiting in line for our lunches takes up at least ten minutes of our limited time. Plus, many parents don’t have the time to pack lunch for their student. In this case, the best solution would be to find a way to cut back on the time students spend waiting in line for their food. 

However, the most popular and wanted solution would be to increase the amount of time students get in lunch. Many students like going outside for Walk and Talk after they finish their lunches (especially seventh and eighth grade - those two grades don’t get recess). If we can increase the time we get at lunch, we can have enough time to go outside and enjoy our food. And, a longer lunch can let us spend more time with our friends, who might not be on the same team as us. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, children who have more time to eat their lunch in school tend to enjoy their food and eat more when they aren’t rushed. 

Also, a longer lunch would promote less food waste. Here in Park Forest, many teachers have expressed their concern for how students take items in the cafeteria lunch line but end up throwing them away without taking a bite. If students get more time to eat, we will be able to consume more food and decrease the amount of food waste - which is one of the leading problems, not just in schools in America, but all around the world. 

Finally, the leading reason why students should get more time at lunch is because it can maximize health benefits. Normally, students are supposed to choose at least one healthy side component of their lunches. But sometimes, the healthy option (like a salad, for example) doesn’t always get consumed. To prevent letting healthy food go to waste because of less time to eat, a longer lunch will come into play as it will let students have more time to finish all the parts of their meal.

All in all, students should get a longer lunch because they can get more time to enjoy their food, decrease food waste, and it can maximize students’ health benefits. Also, lunch doesn’t just let us have more time to eat and socialize. It can make us healthier, happier, and fuller students in the long term.

The Beauty of Language by Tara Gopalan

Language is something that we don’t often think about. After learning it at a young age, the wonder and curiosity that originally came with learning it fades once we have memorised it. Although many people don’t spare a glance at its complexity, language is one of the most amazing things used by humankind. 

The earliest languages are estimated to be 150 thousand years old, meaning they were around during the time of the first modern homo sapiens. Over the years, people have built their civilizations’ cultures, beliefs, and lifestyle off of language. It was the breakthrough in evolution that allowed us to verbally communicate with others. Despite the large differences in languages from all over the world, they all have one thing in common: they shape our world! Our very understanding of this world was shaped by learning a language. 

Just think about it. The fact that you can read, understand, and communicate this information to others is astounding! Your brain has been wired to comprehend language. It is not only a tool, but an understanding! I will not go into the complexities of the brain (I could talk about that all day), but I will say that language is an amazing thing that has been provided to us. 

One day, just sit down and think: isn’t language amazing? I understand that not everyone has the same view as me, but spare a moment in your day to simply appreciate the beauty of language.

8th Grader’s Thoughts on High School By Maddie Schwab & Ella Caldwell

Everyone goes to high school once in their life. For some, it’s closer than others. Everyone seems to have different views on high school. Some were nervous, and some were excited. We sent out a Google form to some of the current 8th graders, to get their feedback on how they are feeling about high school. This is what they said…

Anabelle Bailey, Tristen Henry, Zack Li, Skye Kersnar, Jesse Cozine, and Joanna Huang said they were both nervous and excited about high school. Claire Slocum and Audra Miller both said that they were excited about high school. And Kelsey Gummo said that she was nervous. 

For people that didn't want their names shared. Five people said they are feeling nervous and excited. Two people said that they are feeling excited, and two people said they are feeling excited. 

Things that people said that are making them nervous are changing and the school is much larger than PFMS. Another person said was being the youngest and shortest and there is a bigger chance of not being in class with friends. More things that were said were the large number of classes you could take and or the higher level classes. Two things that almost everyone said were nervous about the size of the school, and the number of people.

We also asked them what classes they are excited about in high school. People who preferred to not have their names in the article responded with Intro to Agriculture, electives, marching band, materials processing, understanding young children, coding, all of them, science, math, and many more!

The next thing that we asked was if people are doing any clubs. Some of the clubs that people said were, Orchestra, Band, Tennis, thespians, track, coding, TSA, art club, marching band, rugby, and quiz bowl. 

A lot of kids have very mixed feelings about high school, some can’t even talk about it, and some aren’t ready to be in the same school as their parent(s) (talking from personal experience).

Meet Me in the Cafeteria: The Scoop on School Lunches By Camilla Thorsen

Whether it's grilled cheese and tomato soup or pizza on Fridays, there’s a lunch choice for everyone that can make the whole day better when it shows up on the menu. Because it can make or break a day, the lunch menu has always been a topic of discussion at schools, and PFMS is no exception. Whether it be to check to see if the options are pleasing to them, fit their dietary needs, or any other reason, checking the lunch menu is a common start to the day.  As the year comes to an end and students have enjoyed the same options all year long, some might be wondering what new and exciting choices and changes will be in store next Fall. 

Megan Schaper, the director of food services for State College Area School District for more than thirty years, and the rest of the cafeteria staff, work hard at making the lunch menus diverse and delicious. Schaper and her team go through a process to find new menu items, working around all the  limits to what they can include.

First, they have to check to make sure the new lunch option fits their categories: it has to be tasty, healthy (meaning it has to meet the USDA calories, fat, and sodium standards), and also be under the $3 budget. “We are looking at planning a menu that most students are happy with,” Schaper explained, ”[but] the price is a limiting factor on what we can offer.” As a way to benefit and help people with many different dietary needs (such as eating kosher, vegetarian, gluten free, lactose intolerant, Halal, or any other eating restriction), the school wants to offer large entree size salads, which is a food suggested often. However, large salads don’t meet the budget right now, so they are unfortunately out of the picture.

Next, to make sure students like the new option, the cafeteria puts it through the cycle three or four times. “The first time the new option is offered, students might not get it because they don’t know what it is,” Schaper said. “This way, they will be exposed to it more and more often, leading to more students buying it.” 

The last step of adding a new food item is making sure it is making money. “The way the school lunch program is funded is by students coming in and buying lunch,” Schaper stated. Just like any business, they need to keep the amount they spend on products and staff in mind. 

All this means that, while students may be eager to add their own new and exciting ideas to the menu, they first have to consider all the factors that their food item must have.

However, despite the challenges involved in adding new food to the lunch menu, the cafeteria staff is always seeking feedback and ideas. In the past, Schaper noted that she has used student surveys to get opinions from students. She and her staff have also gone to food shows that are specifically for schools. 

Students missed out on lots of things because of the pandemic, including the school lunch experience because, before the pandemic, the school lunch line was split in three, and each line served something different. Schaper mentioned that PFMS might be returning to that method of lunch. She said, “In the future, [there might be] one line that is hot sandwiches, one line that is a featured item, and one line that is a pizza and pasta item.” Having more variety will be great for students, who might have specific diets or want more options, the staff, who will probably get more money because more students will buy food, and the lines will be shorter, also resulting in happier students.

All in all, the school cafeteria staff does what they can to produce healthy, varied, and delicious foods for all students, while being restricted by the budget and national standards. They are also open to new ideas from students, parents, and teachers about future lunch options. Finally, PFMS cafeteria’s future looks bright with the new/old lunch lines with different options in each one.

Tips for going to Knoebels/Hersheypark! By Addy Lloyd

1. Make sure to bring a small bag! Don't bring your entire backpack and carry everything around the park. Bring something like a small string bag, purse, mini bag, etc. 

2. Bring lots of water! Parks especially in the summer can get very hot and places like Hershey Park do not have a ton of shade. Knoebels has lots of trees, but there are long lines just to get bottles of water. 

3. Do not bring a ton of money! Bring small quantities of money. It doesn't necessarily mean you can't bring a lot of money, just make sure you're only paying in ones and tens most of the time.(Everybody who's going to Hershey Park just remember Hershey does not take cash they only take cards you can get a debit at the front at a kiosk by depositing cash or you can just bring a credit card) 

4. Be prepared to wait in long lines! Especially at Hershey Park, there are usually long lines that can last up to 30 minutes. Make sure to be careful about where you're going and when you're going to specific rides. Strategize! 

5. PACK SNACKS. This is always a great idea especially for being on the bus on the way there and on the way back. Usually in both parks but mostly Hershey the lines can get pretty long especially for food. Just pack neutral things like goldfish, chips, pretzels, anything that doesn't need to be refrigerated. 

6. Don't go crazy. Take your time. Don't just start running to rides right off the bus, take your time getting everything together and just remember…you have all day! 

7. Don't just get caught on playing the games! Try to actually go on some rides, don't waste your money on all the games.  

8. Take a map. You'll thank me later. 

9. HAVE FUN! Don't worry about all these things just try to do them if you can if you can't no problem just make sure to have fun with your friends and teachers.

Part I. By Genevieve Cody.

Do you ever feel overwhelmed? Like you don’t matter and nothing will ever change? We all have those moments and I want to tell you you’re not alone. Different people have different strategies for coping with these other moments. A bubble bath, a nap, a hug from a loved one. I want to describe all of the different strategies I use.

In this section, I will be starting with my favorite strategies, a bubble bath. When you start a bubble bath you should always get new pajamas, preferably comfy, warm ones. As soon as you get into the bathroom start running the water so that the bathtub is filled when you're ready to get in. When the tub is about halfway filled I start pouring in some bubble bath near where the water is pouring so that the bubbles start to foam up. Warm water is really lovely for bathing. I like to bring my computer into the bathroom and some earbuds.

I then set a one-hour timer and open YouTube or Netflix. I watch YouTubers and TV shows/Movies.

Depression is not only a feeling in your mind, it is also a feeling in your body. It's a state of being where you want to be alone but you don't wanna be lonely, you wanna have friends but you hate socializing, you want to laugh but you're too numb you can't. Depression is hard, everyone has it even a little bit. There are a lot of different ways depression comes. You can have depression but laugh and make everyone smile, you can have depression and never smile. You can even have depression when you don't know you have it. Depression is a lot of different things but what I find most in depression is people not being motivated to do anything, thinking people look at you with hatred and think you're annoying. Everyone has their own side to depression and people deal with it in different ways. But you are not alone, there is always a way out and don't be afraid to get help!

#1. Write something- This can be a narrative, an essay, a play, or really just some kind of writing that you're unfamiliar with.

#2. Try origami- Don’t be intimidated by the crazy pictures on the internet. There are lots of fun and simple tutorials online to help you figure it out.

#3. Do a puzzle- When you’re bored it’s better to get your hands busy. Completing a puzzle  takes a long time, but it's not necessarily boring. Also in the end, completing a puzzle feels really good.

#4. Go for a bike ride- Take a much needed tour around your neighborhood, and get in some exercise!

#5. Paint a picture- There are SO MANY youtube tutorials, and you can pick up a paint set for less than $10.00.

#6. Listen to an audiobook- There are tons of audio book sites that will let you listen to an audiobook for free.

#7. Bake something- This could be something new, something from a cookbook, or just an experiment. If you don’t have a cookbook you can look up plenty of good recipes online.

#8. Go for a walk- Walking is fun and calming, but it is also good exercise. Walking is great for you, and it is a great thing to do when you're bored.

#9. Read a book- Do you have one of those books that you’ve just not had time to read? Well, now is a perfect time to do it.

#10. Listen to music- Music is calming and there’s thousands of music apps on the app store. You can put together a new playlist, and that will keep you busy and entertained.

#11. Color in a coloring book- Studies show that coloring can help relieve stress and anxiety, and you can buy a good coloring book for under $5.00.

#12. Play solitaire- Not only does it take a long time, It’s fun to play, and it only requires one thing: a deck of cards. Also, If you don’t know how to play, you can surely learn on the internet!

#13. Scrapbook- Making a scrapbook is super fun, calming and it’s very creative. Plus, you will smile looking back on old pictures of yourself and your friends.

#14. Redecorate your room- Whether this is just moving a couple of things around, or completely changing up your furniture, it’s a fun activity and you will be able to enjoy your new room for a long time. 

#15. Have a photoshoot- All you need is a camera- whether this is on your phone, computer, or an old fashioned polaroid camera. Invite your friends over, and you will be sure to have a great time.

Instead of trying to be funny or memorable, they’re just like “yOu KnOw yOU wAnT iT!” If the guy who makes Reese's advertisements happens to be reading this, I have some words for you: You may think you’re cool, but all you are is a disappointment to your family. 14. Skittles: fake M&Ms. These are like raisin cookies, so I won’t bother writing a new paragraph. Skittles are a crime against humanity; the devil’s M&Ms. These are horrible. Imagine you wake up on a snowy December morning to the heavenly sound of M&Ms. One is waiting for you on the coffee table; you take a bite of this delectable candy and realise; it’s not M&Ms, it’s Skittles. You spiral into a homicidal frenzy. Skittles are the birthplace of murderers.

13. Tootsie Rolls:  Simply gross. These aren’t candy, they’re for kidnappers to clump together and shove into the mouth of their victims to gag them.

12. Candy Corn:  Yum, flavoured wax. If you melt down candy corn and put a wick in it, boom! You now have a candle! Thank you for listening to my Ted Talk.

11. Smarties: They are okay. Not bad, not great. Although, I read something about high-schoolers smoking smarties? That? That’s just weird.

10. Dum-Dums: Very variable. There are good flavours like Bubble Gum or Orange, but then there are also the bad flavours like Butterscotch or Root Beer. But with the bad flavours, they might not be good candy, but they are mighty fine projectiles!

9. Starburst:  Also variable. It would be seventh if it wasn’t for the Red and Pink flavours. Also, don’t eat these if they’re older than a month.

8. Swedish Fish: Pretty good. Actually, just today I learned there’s more than one flavour. Huh.

7. Hershey Bars:  Okay. The main reason they’re so popular is just because they’re nearby.

6. Crunch Bars: Pretty good. Not really much to say on these other than a nice crunch.

5. M&M: Very nice. They taste good, they don’t melt in your hands, and you can eat a bunch of them at once.

4. Mr. Beast Bars: Actually quite good. Dark Chocolate is always better than milk chocolate, and if you feel like arguing on that, well, Өмір ал.

3. Jolly Ranchers: They are pretty good. They’re also very variable. I’ve had six flavours, and I’ll rank them:

A student got their hair cut in a drill before

When he was first starting to ride a bike - he went straight down a hill into jagger bushes

5. What would you do if you made a table and one of your students bit it and broke all their teeth?

 Cry because of his table

6. If you ate a table what would you do with the chairs?

Probably eat them as the side

7. Are you more of a chihuahua or a really old great dane?

Really old great dane
