On September 29th 2024, an asteroid entered Earth's atmosphere. This asteroid was caught in Earth's gravitational pull, creating a second Moon. This moon is going to orbit earth until it escapes Earth’s gravity in late November. This is Earth's second Moon, also known as a mini moon, and is named “PT5”.
This all seems really cool, which it is, but there is a catch. It appears really, really tiny, we need professional telescopes to be able to see it. Another event like this one occurred in 2022, its name was “NX1”, and there have been even more instances of a second moon entering earth's atmosphere, like in 1981, but the 2022 moon and the 1981 moon were both actually NX1.
There isn't a huge amount of information about this second moon but this was the basics of what it is, how long until it leaves, and other occurrences like this one. If you get an opportunity to go and see it through a telescope you definitely should! NX1 won't return until 2051(27 years from now) and the current second moon, PT5 will comeback next in 2055(31 years from now) so if your 10 years old now and you miss the 2 month window this year, you'll have to try again when you in your 41 years old! So take a chance if you get it, it could be once in a lifetime!
