Rio Torch Lit by William Staniar

On April 21, 2016, the Olympic Torch for the 2016 Rio Games was lit in Ancient Olympia, Greece. This lighting started the Olympic Torch Relay which is where the torch will travel for 2235 km and six days before being presented to the organizers of the Rio Games.

Last week, the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) President Thomas Bach talked to the people of Brazil about the power of the Olympic flame and how it promoted peace and spread Olympic values. He also talked about how the Olympic Games (since Brazil is going through some tough times) would be a message of hope for the country.

The Olympic Torch Relay will travel around Greece and then depart for Brazil. The Brazilian leg will begin on May 3 in Brasilia (the capital of Brazil). This August, on the 5th, the 2016 Rio Olympic Games will begin!
