The sports world has taken a huge hit from the worldwide spread of the Coronavirus. Of course the whole world has taken a huge hit with almost all major events being canceled or postponed, but it has impacted sports as well. The latest news as of 3/24/20 is that the Olympics have been postponed to 2021. This is the first time ever that the games have been postponed in a time of peace.
Nearly all professional leagues of every major sport have suspended their seasons, and the NCAA has cancelled all remaining winter and spring championships. The NBA hiatus will last at least 30 days beginning March 12th. The general public doesn’t have a set date for Major League Baseball’s opening day, but according to masslive.com it probably won’t come before June 1st. The National Hockey League is currently suspended indefinitely, as well as Major League Soccer and other soccer leagues around the world. None of the leagues have a set return date. Other sports like golf and auto racing have also postponed major events such as The Masters and the NASCAR Cup Series race, respectively.
In these completely unprecedented times, the sports world is in shambles. It has taken a huge financial hit, but sports will be back. When it is safe to resume play, the professional leagues will come back swinging. All we can do for now is take precautions to prevent the virus from spreading, and on the sports front, talk about NFL free agency.
