Tyler Herro is the Most Likely Candidate For the Sixth Man of the Year by Macon Workman

April 5, 2022

Tyler Herro: either you love him, hate him, or have no idea who he is. Let me give you some facts before I talk about why he should win the NBA’s “Sixth Man of the Year.”

Tyler Christopher Herro was born on January 20, 2000, in Greenfield, Wisconsin. Tyler Herro is the son of Jen and Chris Herro, and also has two brothers, Myles and Austin.

Herro attended Whitnall High School and was a star player there, dropping 32.9 points, 7.4 rebounds, 3.6 assists, and 3.3 steals per game! Then for college, he joined one of the most dominant teams. No, not UCLA, Duke, Kansas, or North Carolina. He joined Kentucky. He wore the number 14 and had very good stats for being a freshman in college. Scoring 14 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 2.5 assists per game. He also went 35% from beyond the arch and 53% from inside, and was also a 93.5% free throw shooter. He automatically looked like a 1st round pick. So in the 2019 draft, he got picked Number 13, going to South Beach and joining the Miami Heat.

Tyler's career started on fire for a rookie, averaging 13.5 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game, while also averaging 38% from the three-point line. Then Covid hit, but the NBA had the championship tournament in the bubble in Orlando, Florida. The Heat quickly swept the Pacers 4-0, and beat Giannis and the Bucks in five games. Then beat the Boston Celtics to fight the GOAT, LeBron James, and the “Brow,” Anthony Davis in the NBA Finals. But Herro and the Heat came up short, losing 4-2 in the series and giving LeBron his 4th ring.

His second-year stats improved, but did not stand out, averaging 15.1 points, 5 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game, while also going 36% from downtown. They were swept in the first round of the playoffs by last year's NBA champions, the Milwaukee Bucks. But now onto what you’ve all been waiting for: Tyler Herro's 3rd year and possibly “Sixth Man of the Year” season.

Right now the Miami Heat are in 1st place in their conference and 3rd overall in the entire NBA, just under the Memphis Grizzlies and the Phoenix Suns. Now let me ask you what player is taking Tyler Herro’s starting spot? Answer: Max Strus.  Who, you might ask? Exactly! Let's compare:

Tyler Herro’s average points per game: 20.6

Max Strus’s average points per game: 10.6.

Score: 1-0 Herro.

Average rebounds for Herro: 5.0,

Average rebounds for Strus: 3.0.

Score:  2-0 Herro

Assists for Herro: 3.9

Assista for Ma:x 1.3

Score: 3-0.  Tyler Herro wins the final.

So, if Herro is obviously the better player, why is he on the bench? My guess is that since Miami has Jimmy Butler, Bam Adebayo and Kyler Lowry, who are all good scorers, in the starting lineup, you need someone on the bench who can give you 20 points per game and not let the other team catch up when the subs are in. If you look up who the favorite is to win this year’s Sixth Man of the Year, you’ll find Tyler Herro is an overwhelming favorite. Even Kyle Wood from Sports Illustrated said so, writing an article titled “NBA Sixth Man of the Year Future Odds: Tyler Herro Separates from the Pack.”  I encourage you to read that short article. Tyler Herro is also the leading scorer for bench players this year.  The record holder is Ricky Pierce. During the 1989-1990 season, Pierce averaged 23 points from the bench.

Here are the current odds for the candidates to win Sixth Man of the Year.  (The lower the number is, the better the chances are for that player to win the award.):

5th. Buddy Hield  +13000

5th. Jordan Clarkson +13000

4th. Montrez Harrell +12000

2nd. Kevin Love +6500

2nd. Kelly Oubre Jr. +6500

1st. Tyler Herro -20000

I just want you to process that for a solid minute.

Is there anything else to be said?

Exactly.
