On Sunday night, November 13th, 2022, a University of Virginia (UVA) class was on a field trip in Washington, D.C., to attend a play.
Three of the five victims, four of whom are football players for UVA, were killed in a charter bus. The victims included wide receivers Lavel Davis, Jr. and Devin Chandler, and a defensive end D’Sean Perry. Running back Mike Hollins is in critical condition after having emergency surgery. ESPN today released a statement saying that a 5th individual, a female, is doing okay in a hospital.
People suspect this had something to do with UVA football, as the shooter was identified as a UVA 2018 walk-on running back Chrisopher Darnell Jones, Jr. Jones was charged with three counts of second-degree murder after being found at 11 AM in Henrico County, Virgina on Monday morning.
Students of UVA walked through the campus Monday night huddling together, but it was mostly quiet except for the sound of crying from some members of the crowd. Finally, they held up lit phones in the night sky, trying to shine some light after the darkness that unfolded. The football team sat with hoodies up, some eyes bloodshot from crying at the steps of Old Cabell Hall, where a line of students then formed to leave notes and flowers for the fallen players.
I pray and hope you do too for all the families, friends, and football players of UVA, so we can all remember these three people. All three of them were juniors in college.
