Top 10 Trends of 2018 by Jessica Wallace

As 2018 starts coming to an end, the new set of trends that started this year start to die down, but what were those trends? Here are the top 5 trends of 2018.

#5 - Crocs

After the Crocs trend ended in 2007, people who still wore their beloved Crocs were shamed for doing so. But today is the day for all the Croc fans out there. As of 2018, Crocs have become one of the most popular shoes of the year. Have you put your Crocs in the back of the closet? It’s time to get them out and show them off once more!

#4 - Target

Parents, remember the days when hanging out at the mall after school was all the rage? Teens nowadays don’t really use the mall to hang out, can you believe it? A lot of young adults and teenagers actually shop at single stores these days. One of the most popular stores the teens and young adults like to hang out and shop in is Target. Not only can you buy some trendy room decor, a lot of Targets also have a Starbucks.

#3 - Spotify

Out of all the music playing apps, Spotify is the most popular by far. While they all do the same thing (playing music), studies have shown that most people download Spotify. Maybe Spotify is an easier app to use and easier to just put on you music and go.

#2 - Netflix

Netflix has always been a popular app to watch your favorite shows, but as of 2018 it is known that a lot more people use Netflix then in previous years. This is mainly because of the popular shows that Netflix has. For example, Stranger Things recently became a fan favorite on Netflix. Fans of the show have been counting down the days for Stranger Things to start again, which it will in the summer of 2019. But unfortunately they’re just going to have to wait just a bit longer.

#1 - Starbucks

I’m not quite sure why, but the coffee from Starbucks is apparently the best in the world. If you come walking into work or school holding a Starbucks, you’re going to look way more confident to other people. Starbucks has always been popular for their food, but why their coffee? As of 2018, Starbucks has beaten Dunkin’ Donuts as the most popular coffee.

Some of these trends have stayed popular all the way into 2019, and some have died. I am personally excited to see some of these trends come crashing to an end, and seeing some of them get reborn.

What Happened On Christmas Day In History? by Sarah Tate

In 1776 George Washington and the Continental Army crossed the Delaware River on Christmas Day.

The year of 1776 was coming to an end, and George Washington wanted to make one last move for the year on the Hessians. No one agreed to this idea. They were all tired from all of the battles they fought that didn’t necessarily turn out for the good.

But they followed their strong leader across the icy river to give the Hessians one last Christmas present. Imagine opening all your Christmas presents and then the next morning you find out that you have another one to open! I’d be shocked until I would soon see that it is a bunch of soldiers coming to fight me.

Washington’s gamble paid off. The Hessians were still a little disoriented from the previous night’s party. The Continental Army defeated the Hessians with minimal blood involved. With Washington’s big score on the board, he had to re-cross the river with his army and the prisoners in tow.

No one really remembers this day accept for Washington and his Army. This was a big day for U.S. history, and it should be remembered.

Pearl Harbor and Facts About the Battleship Iowa by Ryan Karim

On December 7, 1941 the Empire of Japan had attacked the US naval base of Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. The Americans were caught in a total surprise attack. The reason why they attacked Pearl Harbor, was that the Japanese had no natural resources like rubber or oil, but mainly oil. Japan did find an island where there’s a lot of oil. But to get to that island, they would have to pass the Philippines, a US territory.

The US was a major threat to the Japanese, and the USA was always holding dagger on Japan’s throat with its navy. Japan’s naval superiority was no match for the US navy. So on December 7,1941, the Japanese sent a carrier task force of 6 frontline heavy aircraft carriers and 400 aircraft. The goal was to sink 1 battleship, damage aircraft carriers immobolized the fleet for 6 months.

Then on December 7,1941 black smoke filled the air the Japanese had attacked pearl harbor. Swiftly the Japanese took out the airfields. They sunk 2 battleships but there were no carriers in the Harbor. Battleship USS Pennsylvania the flagship of the Pacific fleet no bombers went for her. Most of the battleships were salvaged. One bomber dropped its bomb, and went through the USS Arizona’s deck and landed on the gunpowder room. 977 sailors lost their lives that morning.

Facts About the Battleship USS Iowa

The battleship USS Iowa is the last class of battleships in the US Navy. Only four ships of this class were made. After the attack on Pearl Harbor, the US needed new battleships. All the other battleships were no match for the Japanese, so America needed a new class of battleships.

First the Americans built the North Carolina class of battleships. The ships were good, but didn’t have enough anti-aircraft (AA) fire and didn’t have enough armor. So the Americans built the Iowa with more AA guns and more armor.

The Coffee Card By Marcus Henry

Many, if not all of you, are familiar with credit cards. Many of your parents purchase coffee with this card. In the UK? That may soon come to an end.

Coffee chain Costa is releasing a new, reusable cup with an embedded NFC chip, the kind found in smartphones for transactions. The cup is known as the Costa Clever Cup. Talk about alliteration! The card can be loaded with money, and then if you’re out to buy coffee, leave your wallet at home! The cup also earns you their usual discount from bringing your own cup, so it’s a win-win. Less things to carry, and you save money! The coffee cup will reportedly also work anywhere that accepts contactless NFC chips. The cup was supposed to be available in late November.

Cardistry By Diddi Ragan

Cardistry is the “art of flourishing cards”, basically it is doing card tricks. Fun fact: a deck of cards can be shuffled 80000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 ways; that’s 67 zeroes! You can shuffle a deck every second since the the estimated time the “Big Bang” happened (1024seconds - that’ a septillion’s worth of seconds!), and still not repeat a combination.

The origin of cardistry is “card” and “artistry”. It is considered a form of filmable art and is enjoyed by anyone who can get their hands on a deck, which are pretty common. Cardistry originated in magic and was considered a filler in a show.

It dates back to the 19th century and even Houdini before he became famous, dabbled in it earning the nickname of the “King of Cards”. It has gained popularity since then because of its fast pace and easily flammable nature, and it has been fueled by social media so much so that Hollywood has made a movie Now You See Me 2, the sequel to Now You See Me.

I highly suggest you look into it more.  Taking the basic, common deck of cards and turning it into something amazing is something that can be shared easily over sites such as Youtube or Instagram.

Three Healthy Snack Choices—Nuts and Pulses and Grains by Ryan Karim

Almonds

Almonds are a good source of nutrition. They include magnesium, vitamin E, and calcium fibers. Almonds also keep your cholesterol level down. Instead of eating something unhealthy for a snack, eat a few almonds instead!

Brazil Nuts

Brazil Nuts are the most healthy nuts in the world. They are rich in protein and carbohydrates. They are also excellent sources of vitamin B-1 (thiamine), vitamin E, magnesium, and zinc. Brazil nuts are also good in recipes.

Oats

Oatmeal is meal made from rolled or ground oats. Interest in oatmeal has increased considerably over the last 20 years because of its health benefits. Oats are rich in complex carbohydrates, as well as water-soluble fiber, which slow digestion down and stabilize levels of blood-glucose. Oatmeal is rich in B vitamins, omega-3 fatty acids, folate, and potassium. Coarse or steel-cut oats contain more fiber than instant varieties.

Dear Old Haunted Penn State by Marcus Henry

Penn State . . . an ordinary college. Or is it? You may have been wandering the streets on Halloween night. But there may have been something . . . something ancient, wandering the streets with you. Here are some haunted tales about the local area that you may not be familiar with:

Betsy Aardsma: You may have heard of the tale of Betsy Aardsma. The Penn State student was wandering the isolated stacks of books in the Penn State Library. She never, never came back out . . . alive. The Penn State Library is now said to be her home… forever.

Old Coaly: Old Coaly was a loyal mule that lugged pieces of limestone to Old Main when it was first being built. After his death, his skeleton was preserved in multiple different locations. At one point in time, his skeleton was in Watts Hall. Students reported hearing hooves clicking on the floor as well as sounds that a mule would make. Some students even claim to have seen a mule in the residence hall.

Tener Hall: This place is haunted by the ghost of a student that reportedly plummeted from the roof of the building. To this date, no one knows if he jumped or if he was pushed. According to an article in Valley Magazine, a picture of the deceased girl and some roses were placed on the ground. The roses lasted for over a month before finally dying.

Runkle Hall: This place is incredibly haunted. Doors opening and closing, beds “heaving as if they were breathing,” disembodied voices, things zooming off of walls, a ghostly old woman sitting in a chair, and more. Someone fled their room as supernatural events took place, then ran back to it to find the door was locked.

Opinion: The Best Pets by Sarah Crutchfield

If you were wondering what the best pet is, well that depends on you. You can have a guinea pig and that might be the best pet for you, but not me. Here are some of the most recommended pets:

  1. Dog (Obviously)- Because they are very loyal and some are good watch dogs.

  2. Fish- Because watching them glide around the water can have a calming effect on a person.

  3. Birds- Because they are very smart. If you teach them they can speak and obey commands.

  4. Cats- Because they are very playful when they aren’t tired and are very agile.

  5. Hamsters- Because they are self content, they will play with themselves all day long. (Your parents wish you were like that I guarantee it)

  6. Guinea Pigs- Because they are easy to care for.

  7. Rats- Because they are very loveable and once they form a bond with you you two will be inseparable.

  8. Rabbits- Because they are quiet. Especially nice if you live in an apartment or dorm.

  9. Hedgehogs- Because they are exotic but not scary looking.

  10. Turtle- Because they listen very well. If you had a hard day and don’t want to talk about it with anyone, talk to your turtle.

On the other side, here are some that you should stay away from.

  1. Arctic Fox- Because it is illegal to have a fox as a pet in some states.

  2. Sugar Glider- Because they have a super strict diet that’s not sold in pet stores.

  3. Venomous Snakes- Because snakes have specialized needs.

  4. Crab Eating Raccoon- Because they are high maintenance.

Tip:  If you are a kid and you want to convince your parents to get you a pet, just ask them when there are a lot of people around;  they will feel pressure and may get you your pet. If that doesn’t work, sorry.

Opinion: College...The Financial Drain by Isaac Mikeasky

If you don’t want to listen to a opinion on colleges and why I think they are a drain on the economy, do yourself a solid and just walk away. However if you stayed here’s why. Basically at average if you live in the state and you attend an in-state university you will have to pay $9,970 per semester on average as cited by the website CollegeData. On average a public university has 6,324 students as found by a website called CommunityCollegerView. That means that the average public university makes millions of dollars a year off of students tuition alone. But public colleges are usually subsidized. Meaning despite making millions a year they still get government welfare. You might not know why this is bad you might say, “Wouldn’t subsidizing colleges cause them to lower tuition prices because they can afford it.” The answer is no.

AID FOR MILLIONAIRES

It’s kind of funny that the answer is the exact opposite. You see, subsidizing colleges and giving them aid makes them less reliant on tuition. The problem with this is they don’t have to care for tuition anymore, they can raise the price of going to college as much as they want and still make substantial profits. In business people don’t just randomly do things out of good will, they usually do things because there is a financial incentive behind it. Universities are soaking up millions of dollars, and then they don’t give it back to the government in the form of taxes, as cited by a New York times article.

DEBT CREATOR

It turns out that 46% of Community College students and 36% of College students are housing insecure (The lack of security a person holds in housing due to high housing costs relative to income, low housing quality, unstable neighborhoods, overcrowding, and/or homelessness) and 9% of 4 year college students, even worse 12% of all community college students were homeless as found by a CNBC study. Now, I am one to agree that college is one of the best investments a person can make with the average college graduate making at least $17,000 more in their salary than the average high school graduate. I’m sure most people are aware of the large costs universities incur, along with the things someone going to get an education needs. But, instead of colleges getting restricted or taxed they get a free pass and even worse, loans are being given out by the government to those who can’t afford tuition. Colleges can just keep inflating the price because the government will just keep giving people loans so that they can afford it. You might think that this is some kind of investment by the government so that once all the loans are paid back they would have more money. But, no they are not making any money from these loans, in fact 1 million college students are going into debt default every year. Which would mean the government would be making either very little or even losing money from these loans. A thing I should note however is the fact that if the average default rate for a college is over 30%, the university is no longer eligible for subsidies so to me that’s a step in the right direction and solutions are clearly not too late to be made.

SOME SOLUTIONS

One solution is to make it so college is free for everyone in the USA. A problem with this idea is that most of the people who support the idea don’t know a way for the government to be able to afford it. Plus, it doesn’t set any parameters to the tuition price and maybe even support those bad business tactics by paying for the college no matter the price. Another way this solution can be done is if all colleges belong to the country and they lower price to only a few hundred dollars. Another potential problem is that those universities are restrained by the speed of the government and as many people know, democracy isn’t exactly the fastest acting form of government and the money the government has to spend to upkeep each school.

A solution is the idea of having one company control all the universities in the US and in exchange they offer low tuition prices, like a government controlled monopoly. The government will also not have to pay for upkeep of those universities, so that’s another plus. Yet there is another issue, the problem with monopolies is that without anyone to compete with companies get lazy and instead of having investments into newer or better things to keep their dominance in a industry they just sit on their money. The idea of building more colleges to meet the growing demand for jobs that need a education, not only will this create more jobs but might just curb the growing cost of an education. The government built universities will have to be supported by them and must be legally restricted from being bought out so that they can’t be purchased by the other already established colleges.

CONCLUSION

No matter what, a education should not cost an arm and a leg to get, especially if it’s a need for this era. College is a major investment and with more and more automation, the demand for a college education just keeps getting higher and higher. While Universities do provide a lot for society, such as research and entertainment, that doesn’t mean what they do that hurts society should be ignored.
