Vocaloid by Madeleine Ko

April 3, 2023

What is a Vocaloid? Simply put, it is vocal synthesizer software that uses voicebanks to create and cover songs. A vocal synth is usually software (but not always) that replicates speech and the human voice. The first vocal synth was a pipe organ that could make the vowel noises A, E, I, O, and U with surprising accuracy. It did this by forcing air through oddly shaped pipes. A, I, O, and U were made from open tubes that mimicked vocal cords, and E used a reed. It was by no means good and sounded terrifying when played in a lower or higher register, but it was a start of incorporating human vocal noises into non-human things.

Skip forward a bit to the 1930s, and a new machine came into play. It was able to talk with more noises than vowel sounds. It forced air through tubes and was played with a keyboard. If you google “Creepy Daisy Bell,” it will come up. This was the first vocal synth to ever sit in the uncanny valley, and it was certainly not the last.

That brings us to 2000 when Yahama tried to create an auto-tune of a professional singer. They then realized that the singer they used for the song would have to cover every song in existence. They then decided to record the singer making simple noises for syllables. Thus came Leon and Lola, the first Vocaloid. They were for two languages, English and Japanese. They too hit the uncanny valley and were not doing well in the market. If you listen to old recordings, it sounds human, but with the intonation and singing voice of a robot.

A few years later came Miriam, and she was by far the best ( so far) in terms of sound. Her voice sounded more like a human and less like a robot. Leon and Lola have since rebooted voicebanks with modern technology, but Miriam was lost to time. Leon, Lola, and Miriam were purchased by the British company zeroG in 2001.

Even with the groundbreaking technology, they still weren’t selling well. Even after Yahama partnered with Crypton future media and released two new models, KAITO and MIEKO who had fewer issues with pronunciation. They then decided to make the best marketing choice they could have. Give their next model an anime girl character box art. Then in 2007 came the 6th public Vocaloid, Hatsune Miku. The first “marketable” vocaloid was supposed to be Megurine Luka, but due to scheduling issues, her release was delayed by two years.  This was an incredible marketing decision, and everything started moving forward from there. Miku didn’t sell well in her first year, but during her second year, she sold more than every other year and model combined. She was creating a lot of money for Crypton and Yahama and they hurried out to finish their next model, Kagamine Rin/Len.

This one was unique in the sense that they had the same voice provider, but there was a change between the masculine and feminine voicebanks. It was essentially two for the price of one. However, due to their rushed making of the product, the voicebanks were not as clear or as high quality as Miku's. After the first month, they were pulled from shelves, fixed, and re-marketed.

Then came Luka Megurine. She wasn’t too special at first until she got an English voice bank. There was no way to get other English voicebanks other than piracy or secondhand, so this was great for people who didn’t speak Japanese to get into Vocaloid.

There are only a few important developments after this, and that is Gumi receiving Voice banks in 17 different languages and having insanely realistic vocals in all of them. Gumi was probably the furthest in the uncanny valley considering that she sounds the most human while being the least human. Nowadays, there are English, Spanish, Chinese, Korean, and Japanese voicebanks, as well as being able to speak other languages through manipulation, such as Dasu warping them so they can speak Tagalog, or V3xman having them speak English and Chinese before those voices banks existed.

Contrary to CosMo@bousouP, Miku disappeared not for being tired out of the idol life, but for a marketing decision to have her move from V5 Vocaloid to Piapro. Piapro is a vocal synth like Vocaloid, only it is far better.

Vocaloid can often be used to talk about social issues because your face and name aren’t tied to it. You can express your discontent with society in a way that is easy to digest for others.

There are a lot of Vocaloid songs about depression, death, the wrongs of the school system, abuse, addiction, societal pressure, losing your sense of self, etc. They say music is a universal medium, and it is. These songs can reach other people in similar places and show they're not alone.

In a note about how it isn’t tied to your face, how do you express identity through music besides putting in explicit information? You put yourself into it( metaphorically). There are ways to show who you are in your music, for example, Pinocchio's mascots, Azari’s songs having no title (and Azari themself not having a name on youtube as a platform), and Dasu’s songs having insanely long titles.

Potato Home For Future Mars Base? by Kale Cunningham

March 28, 2023

Potatoes are made into many different foods on Earth, from French Fries to Hash browns, we even have the state Idaho, nicknamed the potato state. We even have grown Potatoes in space! Seed potatoes were first tested in space in 1995 aboard the Space Shuttle mission STS-73. During the 16 day orbiting trip, the astronauts aboard successfully grew five small Potatoes. Then when the International Space Station (ISS) came into service, Potatoes were grown there as well. The food is a tasty treat compared to the dried food in space. Potatoes are also a healthy snack for astronauts, for one they're rich in vitamin C which helps aid in the workings of our heart, muscles, and nervous system. But what if we could use them to make our home on Mars?

It's Not As Crazy As You Think

It may sound very ridiculous, but it's true! In a recent study for StarCrete, a space company, they created a Concrete-like material that is made out of simulated Martian soil, potato starch and salt. They shaped it into a brick and discovered that it was twice as strong as an average concrete brick on Earth. How they measure how powerful a brick is by a megapascal which is basically how much pressure you would have to put on it to break. A concrete block on Earth has about 32 Megapascals (MPa) but the Potato mixture made a shocking 72 MPa. Even though this is a large amount it's still nothing compared to steel which requires between 450 and 750 MPa to crush it.

A Good Source?

Could potatoes be a good building material? It's a very good debate, Mars is a very unforgiving planet. A few bricks wouldn’t protect you from its cold, dusty weather and dangerous solar radiation. NASA believes that when humans go to Mars, they will have to go underground to avoid the deadly radiation from the Sun. And it's freezing below the surface of Mars, the temperatures can go down to minus 195 degrees! And bricks are not the best a abordbing in heat. Most likely when we first go to Mars we will use a light-weight metal. But we may use potatoes as a food source, they can grow in many different conditions.

So maybe we can use the food for a future home?

The Truth about too much Screen Time and Social Media by Samantha Lozinski

March 28, 2023

On the website HEADPHONES ADDICT, it was estimated there are 352.4 million social media addicts in 2023. That means more than 350 million people are getting fooled by the social media algorithm.

“A social media algorithm is a set of rules and signals that automatically ranks content on a social platform based on how likely each individual social media user is to like it and interact with it.” To simplify it, each social media platform very closely looks at what you are most likely to engage with. For example, tiktok will look at accounts, trending topics, and trending audios you have previously shown interest in. And more, such as comments you’ve posted, videos you’ve liked or shared, the videos you’ve watched all the way to the end, hashtags, captions, etc.

Now, the recommended daily screen time for anybody is two hours, yet the average teenager can manage to spend seven hours on his/her phone a day. That is more than some teenagers sleep. This is where the social media algorithm comes into play. Not only are you spending hours and hours continuously scrolling, but there are also several long-term and temporary effects. The most common temporary effects include “Eye Strain, Dry eyes, Eye pain, Headaches, Blurry Vision, Double Vision, Watery eyes, Eye irritation”.  These are caused by the light the phone radiates, also known as blue light. As these symptoms can be temporary, symptoms can worsen without some treatment.

One of the biggest things social media can do is mess with Mental Health. Good Mental Health can look like “you are confident when faced with new situations or people, you do not always blame yourself, you set goals, you feel good about yourself, you have good self-esteem, etc.” It can also look like being able to “cope with the normal stresses of life”, working productively, etc. Bad mental health can look like always being negative, super stressed, having no time for yourself, anxiety, feeling depressed a lot of the time. This is why the recommended social media is only “30 minutes per day for better physical and mental health”.

And finally, what can social media do to your actual brain? A little-known fact is screen use actually releases this thing called dopamine in the brain. (A feel-good chemical.) This has the possibility of negatively affecting impulse control. Studies have shown that screen time affects the frontal cortex of the brain in a similar effect to cocaine.

All of these things are some of the main things that too much social media can do to affect your life. But, with some effort, teenagers can spend less time on social media. Start by setting time limits for certain apps in your phone's settings, so you can only be on a social media platform for a certain amount of time, or you get a reminder when you start spending too much time on that platform. If you need or want to, even delete the app. After you’ve set time limits or deleted apps,  you will actually find your phone…well… quite boring. Also, one of the things I highly recommend is watching the Netflix Documentary, The Social Dilemma. Netflix Documentary, “The Social Dilemma". Personally, I feel like this almost freaks you out in a good way. It makes you watch (literally) how social media/your phone can affect you negatively. And you will see if you really try, you will feel more happy and content with your life, and yourself.

The Target Effect by Samantha Lozinski

March 26, 2023

Everybody loves Target.(Including Me :)) You can buy anything there, and walk through the endless peaceful aisles, but, there is a science to Target, and it is quite interesting…

  1. Starbucks! You have probably noticed by now that all Starbucks in Targets are always near the entrance. This makes it feel like a more welcoming, cozier vibe. (Plus, everybody loves Starbucks, so ya know.)

  2. The store is so flawlessly set up. For example, “Right by the makeup, you'll find hair products. Next to hair products are the toiletries. Next to those are cleaning supplies and so on.” And, a lot of the seasonal stuff is in the back of the store (Halloween, Back to School, Easter, etc.) making sure you have to walk around or in all of the other aisles along the way.

  3. The bright colors, the lighting, the perfectly arranged shelves. It all makes it look very aesthetic and appealing, making you want to BUY BUY BUY.

  4. Discounts. With the dollar deal bins in the front, and the target app, it can be easy to find a deal, making that just one of the reasons why you should buy that 20 dollar item you don't really need.

  5. The target carts. The shopping carts at Target are actually a third larger than the average cart! This encourages you to just fill it up right away.

  6. And, finally, collabs. They collaborate with high end designers. They do this to get designer things at a fraction of the price. But sometimes you don’t really need that thing, but since it has a name attached to it, it seems more worthy of purchasing.

Different Ways to Strengthen your Bond with your Pets by Brenna Bucher

February 21, 2023

To start off, I am not saying that you don’t already have a strong bond with your pet. And I am also not saying that this will 100% work; every animal is different and unique. Now what I am saying is that maybe you could try these things and see if it works. If it doesn't, do your own research. Hope this helps!

Time

Time is a big thing in the animal world. The more time you spend with your animal, whether it is a cat or dog or guinea pig, the more the animal will start seeing you as family and start respecting you

Fun

Fun is important to us all. If you just work and work and work, you aren't really having fun, even if you enjoy that work. You need to take time off work and just have fun. Like snuggling with your animal, or taking them outside and for a walk. Just knowing that you gave time for them is so much and can make a big difference on the animal.

Patience

“Patience is key '' is a really good saying, because it tells you that being patient is important, and it is. If you push an animal to do something that it doesn't want to do, it will slowly start to get angry at you, or just angry in general. Sometimes if the animal has an anxiety problem and you are trying to get them to stop doing something by force, the animal will become scared and depressed. So take time and don’t expect things to come easily.

Feeding

If animals know you are the one to bring the food, they will start getting excited when they see you and that can help strengthen your bond. Hand feeding can also help. It shows the animal that it is safe to eat around you, and that they don’t have to be defensive of their food.

Not So French Stuff by Camilla Thorsen and Stella Loverich

February 17, 2023

Have you ever heard someone talking about their brand new French tips, seen someone braiding a French braid, or eaten a French fry and wondered if they were really from France? This is an interesting question, and in this article, we will tell you about these three supposedly “French” things.

French Fries

This delicious fried side has always been known as French fries, but are they really from France? The answer is no. Rumor has it that these appetizing potato snacks are actually from Namur in Belgium and were just a replacement for their favorite meal, fried fish! In 1680, the river that they used to fish in froze over, and they created the first French fry as a substitution with potatoes. Don’t ask us why they named this snack supposedly created in Belgium after France because we don’t know. But we do know the French didn’t create it.

French Tips

Have you ever seen someone walking around with their new French tips? You know, the manicure where only the ends of your nails are painted? Well, it turns out that this iconic French manicure isn't actually French either! This style originated in 1975 in Hollywood, when everyone was complaining about how long it took to change the nail colors in between sets. The solution was a simple, versatile nail color that significantly reduced the time it took to do everyone’s nails. The American nail trend still lives after 45 years!!

French Braids

This hairstyle had been very popular, with 5-year-olds to 50-year-olds sporting it out and about!! But what if it wasn’t actually French?? It turns out that this type of braid goes back to the Tassili n'Ajjer mountain range in Algeria, where there are statues of women wearing this hairstyle 6,000 years ago. But also around this time, the Sung Dynasty in China is believed to have upper-class women wearing this hairstyle, and the Greeks were also thought to have been wrapping their hair in a similar “French” fashion and piling it on top of their heads to create a crown shape. So did the Algerians really create this iconic style, or was it someone else? We aren’t sure, but we know it DEFINITELY wasn’t the French.

The 20th Anniversary Of The Columbia Disaster by Kale Cunningham

February 1, 2023

It was an early morning on the International Space Station on February 1, 2003. Two of the three astronauts aboard were sleeping in. It was a Saturday morning and after a long week, Ken Bowersox and Nikolai Budarin, part of the Expedition 6 crew, wanted to sleep in. But one of them, Don Pettit, was awake enjoying his morning coffee while watching the Earth out the window. As the space station sailed over the United States, Pettit remembered something, today his friends onboard the space shuttle Columbia would be returning. But then his attention was drawn back to the incredible view, he saw all the great cities on the west coast. L.A., Phoenix, and Houston. It was very bright above Texas, so it shielded Pettit's view of a horrible disaster; he never saw the flames as the shuttle with all his friends disappeared above the blue sky.

STS-107

On January 16, 2003, the space shuttle Columbia lifted off the launch pad with her crew. The mission was dubbed STS-107 it was a two-week mission that involved studying how DNA reacts to the space environment. The crew consisted of David Brown, Laurel Clark, Michael Anderson, Ilan Ramon, Rick Husband, Kalpana Chawla, and William McCool. The first astronaut from Israel, Ilan Ramon, was part of the crew; he was an air force fighter pilot and once part of an intense battle in the skies. The astronauts were supposed to land back on Earth on February 1.

A Problem

The launch was flawless, except for one minor factor. During the launch, a piece of insulating foam fell off the orange external tank and struck the shuttle's left wing. The falling foam was caught on tape and discovered after a replay of the launch video. Some people thought that this was a very bad situation because the shuttle had tiles that protected Columbia on its fiery reentry through the atmosphere, which seemed to be possibly damaged, if that was so then the shuttle would burn up. But to other people, it wasn’t a worry at all. In the video, it looked like the foam had bounced harmlessly off. So the problem was dismissed. No NASA officials were told about the problem, and the crew aboard the shuttle was never notified about the possible damage.

A Strong Connection

Don Pettit was on board the ISS well before the launch of STS-107, and very quickly we started talking with the crew via radio. At first, they just talked about their missions and what they were discovering, but after a while, they started to talk about their personal lives. And soon they even started to play chess together, Pettit would set up the board on the ISS and McCool would email the ISS from Columbia his moves with the pieces. It was fun to pass the time, the astronauts got closer to each other. Little did Pettit know but, in a matter of days his friends would be gone. And he would be alone in space with his two other crewmates wondering “Why did you go?”

The Night Before Disaster

The night before the landing, the crewmates were getting ready, and the experiments were shut down and packed up. The space shuttle was pointed in a position that would take it down from orbit the next day. But before the crew slept they decided to call a good friend of theirs who was back on Earth. Astronaut Mike Massimino, who was at the time currently going through CAPCOM training. Massimino recalled the call he had with the crew in his autobiography Spaceman

“How's it up there?” he asked

“Oh, Mass,” Laurel Clark responded, calling him by his nickname, “It's not good. I don’t think you should ever come back,” she joked.

They talked back and forth for a while until their time was up, so the commander Rick Husband ended by saying, “We really appreciate you, for taking time out of your day to come and talk with us, thanks so much. It's great to talk with you, and we look forward to seeing you when we get back.”

Massimino hung up the call and went home, not knowing that besides the CAPCOM who was on duty, he was the last person on Earth that would speak to the crew.

The Lost Voyagers

Columbia was supposed to touch down at Kennedy Space Center in Florida. It had been done several times, to the American space program, and landing wasn’t a big deal. The Soviets had lost some people when they were landing. But in America’s history, it wasn’t a big deal. The landing was happening early in the morning, so unless space lovers wanted to tune in on NASA television, it would be another typical mission for the space shuttle. But as the space shuttle descended down to Earth, the crew noticed something was wrong. The tire pressure in one of the shuttle's huge landing wheels was low. Meaning that the tire was melting. Rick Husband reported the news to mission control, but before he could report anything else, he was cut off. When something re-enters Earth’s atmosphere it creates a cloud of plasma that radio signals can’t get through. It normally means 30 minutes blackout, between the crew and mission control. But when the 30 minutes were up, the crew didn’t respond to the ground’s calls.

“Columbia, Houston. Comm check.”

Nothing but silence.

“Columbia, Houston. Comm check.”

Static hissed back, but no response.

“Columbia, Houston. Comm check.”

Nothing.

More hopeless calls went out.

This continued until the flight director made the call that no one at NASA ever wants to make. “Close the doors,” he said, putting his hands on his head, trying to hide the sadness and tears that filled his eyes.

But what he meant by ‘closing the doors’ was, “We lost them,”

The True Meaning Of Space

After the disaster, Congress cut off millions of dollars from NASA’s budget, and to this day, they are still recovering. The space shuttle program was grounded, and many people said that it would never fly again. The crew on the ISS that was supposed to come down to Earth the next month in March on a space shuttle, had to wait until May when a Russian Soyuz capsule came to their rescue. NASA teams spent months searching for what went wrong with the disaster. And they confirmed that the ‘harmless piece of foam’ caused the whole disaster. All the damage was caused by a piece of foam. But then more people rewatched past launch videos, foam was coming off the External Tank (ET) almost every launch! It looked like the end for the space shuttle, but NASA was sure that they could still use it for one more goal, to complete the ISS. So NASA addressed all the problems, they made the insulating stick with a killer grip to the ET. Another problem was blind spots on the space shuttle, during launch. There weren’t enough cameras. So NASA stuffed the shuttle with HD cameras. All the known problems with the shuttle were fixed. And in July 2005 the space shuttle Discovery lifted off. However, during that launch, some foam broke off and the shuttle took a hit, after it docked with the ISS, images were taken and it didn’t look threatening, too many people at NASA it was pure luck that the shuttle got back on the ground. The shuttle was grounded for another year, fortunately, the shuttle got back to normal flights in 2006.

But as extra precautions the rest of the shuttle missions would only fly to the ISS or the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). And damage had been done and there was no recovering, the shuttle would retire in the summer of 2011.

As we continue to advance our understanding of space, we must remember what happens when we get too ahead of ourselves. And remember what happened in the sky on that winter day in 2003.

Valentine's Day by Ella Caldwell

January 18, 2023

I don’t know if it’s just me but I think Valentine’s Day is an overlooked holiday. Like it’s there and then it’s gone. Is there anything else to it other than love? Well, here are some fun facts about Valentine’s day.

  • Teachers are the number one receiver of Valentines

  • Paris was the first place to celebrate Valentine’s Day

  • 145 million cards are exchanged every year for Valentines Day

  • Over 1 billion dollars worth of chocolate is sold every year for Valentine’s Day

  • Over 8 billion candy hearts are made every year

  • The heart shape didn’t used to be a symbol of romanticness

  • The first Valentine was sent in the 15th century

  • 250 million roses are grown just for Valentines Day alone

Those are just a few of the fun facts that I thought were cool. Even though this isn’t technically about Valentine’s Day it correlates. Did you know that chocolate used to be the prescription for a broken heart? I didn’t. I hope everyone has a good Valentine’s Day!

New Year, New Things by Ella Caldwell

January 11, 2023

2023 is a new and what should be exciting year. But what will come with this new year? This is what we would like to know. Keep on reading to learn about these new things coming up.

Tech

Apple has said that they might release their very own VR headset. That would be a first. They also should be coming out with a 15 inch MacBook Air, iMac, a Mac Pro and more to come. I would say the biggest is the VR headset though.

Music

There are also many new music albums playing to come out this year. In January “The Mocking Bird and The Crow” by Hardy, and “Rush!” by Maneskin. In February “Queen of Me” by Shania Twain, “This is Why” by Paramore and “Cracker Island” by Gorillaz. There is much more as well, but these are some of the albums coming out soonest.

Movies

There are many upcoming movies for this year. Some that can be listed are, “Oppenheimer”, “The Little Mermaid”, “Wonka”, “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom”, “Avatar 3” and “Scream 6”. Again there are many more, but there are too many to list. A lot of the new movies are remakes. Many people on social media are excited to see the new “Little Mermaid” because Ariel is played by a black woman. And it’s quite rare to see a person of color star as a princess in a movie. So this is quite exciting.

Books

There are also many new books coming out this year. Some of the titles are, “How to Sell a Haunted House” by Grady Hendrix, “Happy Place” by Emily Henry, and “Spare” by Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex. “Happy Place” sounds like a very happy place! Hopefully you can find a good book this upcoming year.

Cars

Lots of people like cars. I’m not one of them but for those who do, here are some new cars coming out in 2023. The 2023 Chevrolet Corvette, the 2023 Nissan Z, the 2023 BMW XM, the 2023 Toyota Crown, and the 2023 Honda Civic Type R. There are many more to come out this next year in 2023, but those are just some.

Gas Prices

As many have known, gas prices have been up a lot lately. But how will they be in 2023? Well, the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) predicts that the average price for a gallon of gas will be $3.51.
