Why Should We Shorten the School Days by J. Ashbury and C. Wang

“Yawn,” you emit as you get out of bed. You look at the clock. It’s 6:30 AM. You groan. In elementary, you could wake up and 7:00 to 7:30 and have enough time to take a shower, eat breakfast, and maybe you could squeeze in 10 minutes of free time. If you want to do that now, you have to wake up at an earlier hour. Life stinks.

You get onto the school bus, still sleepy-eyed. You literally want to drop down and sleep. Get through the long school day, and you get back home, and slam your body into the couch. This happens every five days. You’d rather get out of school earlier to get a nap in or go to school later so you get enough sleep. Gosh!

That’s the reason why we should shorten middle school days by just even 30 minutes. The reason is that we think is that even though you’re the best student ever, and everything seems easy for you, 30 extra minutes of sleep can help you even more! You know that the 6th grade Wolves team has this thing called Walkout Wednesday, and teachers say because that exercising helps your brain get through the day. We think sleep can, too. If we shorten school days, we think it can help student’s brains to do better, and they feel more refreshed.
