It’s that time of year, drama club is arranging itself! This year, we are doing the musical Aladdin Jr. A lot of time and effort goes into a musical like Aladdin Jr. We have the cast, hair, makeup, crew, and the set designers. The cast, of course, will act out the story, while the hair, makeup, and set designers will create the sets and backdrops that will create world of Agrabah, the magical land where Aladdin takes place.
The musical starts with the opening song, “Arabian Nights”. Jasmine is forced by her father, The Sultan, to pick a suitor. Eventually, Jasmine is runs away, trying to escape palace life. Aladdin and Jasmine soon meet, and discover that they both feel trapped. The guards arrest Aladdin by order of Jafar. In a cave filled with treasures, Aladdin finds a lamp and rubs it, revealing the comical Genie inside. He tricks the Genie into getting them out of the Jafar’s cave, in which they are trapped. He now has three wishes, the first of which he uses to make himself a prince. As Ali Ababwa, he attempts to woo Jasmine, but this fails; she still has her heart set on Aladdin, not some fancy prince. Iago, Jafar’s parrot sidekick, suspects that Aladdin may be in possession of a genie, and Jafar soon agrees.
In another part of the palace, “Prince Ali” finally gains Jasmine’s trust, and they go on a magic carpet ride, singing the famous song “A Whole New World”. They decide to be married in the morning. Soon, the guards seize Aladdin and he uses his second wish to freeze the guards. He runs to hug the Genie, leaving behind the lamp. Iago then steals the lamp and Genie is now forced to work for Jafar. The next day comes, and Jafar crashes the wedding, claiming that Ali is nothing but a street rat named Aladdin; of course, this is true. With the Genie on his side, Jafar is all-powerful… almost. Will Jafar succeed and be the sultan, or will Aladdin out-wit him? Do Aladdin and Jasmine live happily ever after? Find out when we perform the show in March!
With many characters like Aladdin, Jasmine, The Genie, Jafar, Iago, and the Sultan, Aladdin, the musical is very similar to the Disney movie. Many are excited to audition as their favorite character. The songs in Aladdin include movie favorites such as “Friend Like Me”, “Prince Ali”, and “A Whole New World”, as well as new songs exclusive to the musical like a villain song sang by Jafar and Iago called “Why Me?”. The show is going to be fantastic!
The auditions will take place November 9th and 10th, with callbacks on the 11th. Drama Club meetings will happen most Mondays.
