The Greatest Rivalry: Ohio State vs. Michigan by Andrew Zajac

November 21, 2022

On Saturday November 26, 2022 the greatest college rivalry will take place at the Horseshoe in Columbus, Ohio.

In this matchup, surprisingly Michigan has the lead all time with 58-51-6 edge. Since 2001, however, Ohio State has won 17 of the 19 games played. This year will be legendary, going into the final week of the college football season both teams are 11-0 and are sitting in the top 3 in the country. Also both teams are in the one and two spots for the Big Ten East. Whoever wins this game will be in the College Football Playoff and will be in the Big Ten Championship. Still whoever loses will get a good fallback option, with the Rose Bowl game and a possibility at the #4 seed in the College Football Championship.

Now let's go back in time to some of the most memorable games this rivalry has to offer.  One of the greatest games in this series was the 1950 “Snow Bowl”. There was a full blizzard in Columbus with 5 inches of snow outside and 29 mph wind. It was the worst blizzard in 37 years in Columbus. And still 50, 503 people braved the weather to watch their team play their rival. Michigan pulled off the win on the road with a score of 9-3. Another great game was in 1968. But this game was for a spot in the College Football Championship. It was the largest crowd ever recorded in Ohio State Stadium, with a total of 85, 371 people jammed in to watch their team try to make the championship. And Ohio State came to play that day beating the pants off of Michigan 50-14.

But arguably the best game in this matchups history has to be when they faced off in 2006 with a spot in the BCS national championship on the line. Michigan won the Big Ten title but they were sitting in second place while Ohio State was in first. Most sports writers call this game the “Game of the Century”. It ended with Ohio State winning the shootout with a score of 42-39.

So what do you think is going to happen this year? Will it be a shootout where every point counts, or will it be a knockout where one team destroys the other? I think Ohio State will win at home with a score of 28-24.
