Wake Forest Opening Series Preview By Andrew Zajac

February 4, 2025

College Baseball is back! The Tennesee Volunteers took down the Texas A&M Aggies in Game Three of the College Baseball World Series Finals in 2024. That was over seven months ago, on June 24, 2024, and opening day this year is on Valentine’s Day this year. It has been a long awaited return to College Baseball, especially after the eventful 2024 year. The Wake Forest Demon Deacons have a chip on their shoulder after the way their 2024 season tragically ended in the Greenville Regional with consecutive losses to Virginia Commonwealth and Eastern Carolina. They hopefully will start off the campaign strong with games at home against Long Island and Marist.

The Demon Deacons open up the new campaign after going 38-22 and like I mentioned before getting swept out of the Greenville Regional. They return as a new team after losing big name stars such as pitcher Chase Burns, first basemen Nick Kurtz, and utility man Seaver King. But they recruited and found elite talent to replace them including transfer pitcher Luke Schmolke from Georgia Tech, transfer Mitchell Salvino, and first baseman Ethan Conrad. Star players such as Marek Houston, Jack Winnay, Blake Morningstar, and William Ray.

The Long Island Sharks start off the new season after going a respectable 33-25 last year and being swept out of the Chapel Hill Regional by UNC and Wofford. The Sharks are led by coach Dan Pirillo and star players Jack Ryan, Justin DeCastro, and Benjamin Fierenzi.

The Marist Red Foxes will kick off the new year after a shameful 20-35 record in 2024, but did make a postseason push eventually losing to Fairfield in the MAAC Championship. The Red Foxes are led by coach Lance Racthford and star players Caleb Kempler, Lewis Rodriguez, and Kyle Pollack.

The Schedule for the weekend is as follows:

Wake Forest- 2/14 4pm vs Long Island, 2/15 4pm vs Marist, 2/16 9:30am vs Long Island (DH), 2/16 1pm vs Marist (DH).

Long Island- 2/14 12pm vs Marist (DH), 2/14 4pm at #14 Wake Forest (DH), 2/15 12pm vs Marist, 2/16 9:30am at #14 Wake Forest.

Marist- 2/14 12pm vs Marist, 2/15 12pm vs Marist (DH), 2/15 4pm at Wake Forest (DH), 2/16 1pm at #14 Wake Forest.
