Brexit: Why It Matters by Toby Ma

As American politicians and a businessman bicker over voters to be elected the 45th President of the United States, North Korea conducts nuclear missile testing, and as ISIL wreaks havoc across the world, news channels have devoted few of their air time to cover another important topic that may have global repercussions. On June 23, 2016, citizens of the British, Irish, and Commonwealth are able to vote to decide whether or not the United Kingdom should remain a part of the European Union. It’s hard to imagine why we would care about our former overlords across the water, but in fact, the referendum will greatly affect the United States and the world, and determine the future of democracy and peace in the West.

The European Union is a political and economic partnership founded after World War Two to promote trade and cooperation between European countries in order to deter war on the continent. Currently, it allows trade and people to freely move between member nations (known as the Schengen Area); circulates its own currency, the euro; and even has its own parliament, which sets rules for all member nations, including on the environment and transport.

The leave campaign is displeased with certain aspects of being a member of the EU, such as open borders with other countries, membership fees, and the freedom to make trade agreements with other countries outside of the EU. They also believe that leaving the European Union will boost the economy and make the United Kingdom an independent nation. Those campaigning for staying in the European Union believe the opposite will happen.

Leave campaigners believe that there will be a growth in jobs as large companies are freed from EU regulations and benefit smaller businesses that don’t trade with the EU. Those who want to stay say that 3-4 million jobs could be lost from manufacturers moving to EU countries with cheaper labor. Trade and investment could cause jobs to grow scarcer if it falls after a Brexit, but if it increases, more jobs would be created. Wages may rise from a Brexit, which would be beneficial to workers, but bad for employers. The economy could go either way, with from a 9.5% decrease in GDP to a 1.6% rise in GDP by 2030.

The UK would also be able to regain full control of its borders and the power to issue visas and control immigration. This could increase job opportunities for British people in the UK and ease the pressure housing and service providers. Stay campaigners argue that immigration of citizens of the EU, taxes paid by migrants, and migrant labor has had an overall positive effect on the UK economy.

The UK would also be able to save £8.5 billion, about $12.5 billion dollars, a year if it left the EU for membership fees. The UK would be able to use the money on other important things, such as science funding. Stay campaigners argue that the UK will still have to pay the EU if the country wants access to the single market, and the EU already supports UK universities and scientists with millions of dollars of funding and grants.

The debate has become heated in the UK in the months leading up to the referendum. Both Leave and Stay campaigns have their own views, plans, and projections for the risks of staying or leaving the UK. Even President Obama, when he visited the UK in April, weighed in on the debate. He personally believes that leaving the EU would not be a good idea.

“The United Kingdom is at its best when it is helping to lead a strong Europe,” Obama said. “It leverages UK power to be part of the European Union.”

Many Republicans and British Leave campaigners have condemned Obama for having his say in the matter, but leaving in the EU would also threaten American and European interests. In a time when ISIS is building its “caliphate” in the Middle East and Russia is become more hostile to Western nations, a Brexit might prompt other nations to follow suit, further fracturing unity in Europe, and upset the global economy. The UK would also become a country watching the world stage instead of actively participating in its events. If Scotland decides to hold a referendum for independence again in order to remain in the EU, the UK would also lose its Trident nuclear programme, a nuclear deterrent for the UK.

In our world now marked by unrest, unity is important for the United States and its allies. If the UK decides to leave the European Union on June 23, that unity might be threatened. Although the United Kingdom may benefit from leaving the EU, perhaps it will be at the sacrifice of world peace. The whole world will be watching as British voters make this important decision a month from now, just as they will watch our own election in November.

Trump Wins 1237 Delegates (Editorial) by Kyle Hynes

It’s official.

Any glimmer of hope that Donald J. Trump could possibly be stopped is now gone, as the state of Washington has nudged him over the line, only barely, to 1238 delegates and the nomination. Trump, who started off at 3% in the polls, is no longer the presumptive Republican nominee. He is the real nominee.

There will be no floor flight in 2016 to attempt to stop this anti-establishment “Republican”.

Trump lovers were certain of what would happen. Trump haters were still holding out hope.

Now Trump is focusing on Hillary Clinton and the November general election, and gearing up for a June debate with Sen. Bernie Sanders.

Who were the choices one year ago?

Paul Ryan, Mitch McConnell, Ted Cruz, Jeb Bush, Scott Walker, Marco Rubio.

Now?

Donald J. Trump.

Congratulations, Republicans. Give yourselves a big pat on the back.

Oxygen on Mars by William Staniar

Recently, in the upper layers of the Martian atmosphere, atomic oxygen atoms have been found. With this discovery, scientists will be able to understand the atmosphere around the red planet better.

An instrument on board of the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA) made this discovery. The SOFIA is a Boeing 747 jet that is modified to carry a telescope 100 inches in diameter.

We haven’t been able to detect these atoms before because researchers weren’t able to measure the wavelengths connected with them. But, when the atoms were discovered recently, the SOFIA was able to fly over the moisture in Earth’s atmosphere (which blocks the infrared wavelength detection). This was what made researchers able to see these wavelengths.

The result of the discovery was that scientists found half of the amount of atomic oxygen that they expected. This was most likely due to variations in the atmosphere. The SOFIA will continue to gather information to study more about our neighboring planet.

Siri Coming to Macbooks by Hely Parmar

Siri might be taking a turn into Macbooks and Apple desktops with the software OS X 10.12, which is going to be the newest Apple software. MacRumors is a site that has solid news and/or rumors about Apple and Mac products. They posted two screenshots of a Siri icon from an OX computer, which also came from two trusted sites. There is a conference for Apple Developers that runs from June 13th to 17th. We’ll probably see some type of demo or explanation during that time.

New Hawaiian Island by Josh Davis

You might have heard of Hawaii and the islands in it's chain. Nihau, Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, Lanai, Maui, Kaho Olawe, and Hawaii- the islands of Hawaii. But soon there will be another: Loihi. A hot spot has created the rest of the islands over a long period of time, and now after a long wait, a new island is forming. A hot spot is an unusually hot spot in the earths crust due to a thin piece of a tectonic plate or crust.

With this hot spot, magma eventually burns through the crust and usually into a body of water. When the magma cools, it becomes rock. When enough rock forms onto the piece of land, it peaks over the water and becomes un-submerged. This is what we call an island.

Now, if what I just explained is confusing, it´s ok, because you don´t really need to know that to know why Hawaiian Islands aren´t growing on top of each other. The earths crust is moving towards Japan, and the change is quite noticeable. The smallest Hawaiian Island and the furthest away from the new one is getting smaller because it is the oldest of them and is sinking back underwater. But it was made at that same hot spot, the one where the new island is being made. The earths crust has moved it that far.

That same island will be gone soon, when it fully sinks underwater. This happens quite frequently in Micronesia and Polynesia, but it is also now happening with Hawaii. There is nothing to worry though-the island will still be there for an estimated 125 more years.

This new island popping up sounds really rare, but it´s not-keep your eye out on the news or here on the PFMS newspaper for articles on other Hawaiian Islands popping up. More are to come, and quite soon.

President Obama to Visit Hiroshima by Ben Abel

While in Japan at the G-7 summit, the White House has certified that president Obama will visit Hiroshima.  This will be the first visit by a president there since the atomic bombing of there and Nagasaki at the end of World War II.  Obama actually expressed hope to do this near the beginning of his presidency.  However, many people feel that this would be seen as an apology by the Japanese, or, worse, expressed as one.  The White House feels no need to apologize as there would have been more deaths in a land war, as opposed to the supposedly fewer lives lost in the bombing.  However, documents have been found that suggest that Japan was going to surrender anyway, rendering the bombing unnecessary.  Either way, it is always a good idea to apologize.  This trip is a good idea, no matter what the critics think.

Facebook Political Bias by Kueyoung Kim

Several former Facebook employees revealed that Facebook was manipulating the “Trending” sidebar so that conservative posts would not be noticed, instead showing liberal posts.

Facebook denied the accusations, claiming that they have found no evidence that it was true. They stated that Facebook was supportive of opinions “across the political spectrum.”

Lean Wolf of RedState was skeptical of the accusations, stating that Facebook has never been targeted for any bias.

The Republican National Committee's chairman, Reince Priebus, states that it is highly disturbing that Facebook would use their power to suppress certain opinions to match their own bias.

New Cumberland Gap Quarter by Joshua Davis

See Story Complete with Pictures here

Updated Information

The Shawnee National Park quarter was just released and is already in circulation. You have seen this quarter around, and if you have, that means that you have seen the newest minted quarter type in the world.

This coin features a hawk flying over an intricately designed  rock formation with closely imprinted rocks. The grain and bushes on the bottom represent the farming in Illinois. On the front it shows the new version of George Washington. New looks on his face feature more detail in his neck and hair, and more noticeable imprintation details on his face all add up to make up a better design for a modern coin.

Overall, this coin was greatly designed and has an amazing array of details. I really like this coin, but it is just one of the 54 National Park quarters that will be made. Each one is an incredible piece of art, but if you don’t look into it and research each little part of it, the whole story doesn’t come across.

All of the National Park quarters in this series are an amazing piece of art, just as breathtaking as the Mona Lisa. Anyway, there are more of these coming out very soon, and you should keep watching the PFMS Times for updates on new coins being released.

The new Cumberland Gap quarter is here! The next quarter in the National park series that will be releasing 4 quarters every year until 2021 releases the Cumberland Gap quarter.

The design is quite simple but effective. In this quarter, all of the detail is forced into one place and it draws all of the attention where it is supposed to be. Now, Cumberland Gap is a mountain pass through the Cumberland Mountains, which allowed many people to travel west through the Appalachian Mountains easily. This mountain pass was a huge impact on America and it’s westward expansion, so it was made into a national park in 1940.

It is considered the first gateway to the west, along with the Gateway arch (although the Gateway arch isn’t the first gateway to the west).

The coins reverse (back) depicts a highly detailed frontiersman with a rifle, and shows the Cumberland Mountains in the background. You also have the usual National Park type of George Washington.

Otherwise, the coin is quite passive and doesn’t really catch the eye. But, even though this quarter isn’t going to stop you in your tracks and make you admire how beautiful it is, it still is an amazing piece of art.

Israel's Ministry of Health Targets McDonalds for Boycott by Ben Abel

"You shouldn't eat junk food. McDonald’s: Out. Not in our country," said Israel’s health minister Yakov Litzman on April 12.

McDonald’s is the biggest fast food chain in all of Israel.  There are even kosher branches scattered across Israel.  During passover, instead of it’s usual hamburger buns, McDonald’s uses special potato starch buns, so that Jews can dine there despite the tradition of not eating risen bread.

Most Israelis are healthier than the average American.  The occasional salad for breakfast and falafel and hummus as food make it perfect for vegetarians, or even vegans.  Though, according to 2013 health ministry statistics, about half of Israel’s adults are overweight!  Obviously, some course of action needs to be taken.  That is why the health minister is proposing to boycott McDonald’s.

In an attempt to prevent criticism, The fast food chain has made changes to its menu around the world: in Israel, McDonald’s says, they have eliminated trans fats from French fries, brought reduced fat from unprocessed meat from eighteen percent to nine percent, cut the saturated fat in its fried foods by two thirds, and reduced sodium and sugar in all of its food.  That was still not enough, though…

Ideas for making people healthier in all of Israel by the health ministry include: taxes on soft drinks, limiting junk food ads, and providing healthy food for poor people.  Later the ministry uncovered an embarrassing fact: the office staff had spent approximately 70,000 shekels (about $18,600) on soft drinks in the past year.  Israel still has far to go, though at the last meeting of the health ministry, those present ate fruit and drank water.

Cruz Bows Out of Race by Kyle Hynes

On Tuesday night, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz suspended his campaign after a loss in the Indiana primary. At 8:42, he said that, “Though I am suspending our campaign, we are not suspending our fight for liberty.” Sen. Cruz dropped out after a bone-crushing loss by 17 percentage points in the Indiana GOP Primary, and failed to endorse any candidate, although he seemed to point to John Kasich as an unspoken endorsement.

Sen. Cruz seemed to be the only candidate to have a chance to knock out Donald J. Trump, mathematically eliminated the possibility of a contested convention. Cruz dropped out tonight with a total of 567 delegates. Interestingly, he never mentioned the names of Mr. Trump or Gov. Kasich. At this point, with less than 7 states remaining, Trump is now the guaranteed nominee. Mr. Trump will now turn his full attention to Democratic candidate Sec. Clinton. This opens the door for a Kasich dropout and a Trump versus Clinton general election.

Now, as Sen. Sanders and Mr. Trump have won the Indiana primary, it brings another question: does Sanders now have a new path to victory?

Editors Note: At press time, Kasich has officially dropped out of the race according to CNN.com.
