Cats vs. Dogs (Pros and Cons) by Waverly Huang

Cats are extremely interesting animals, and I love them. I like Cats better, (if you haven’t figured out already.) But I also like dogs, don’t get me wrong, I am just more of a cat person since I grew up around them.

Pros of Cats

  • They aren’t loud, they meow, mew, murp, purr, and hiss if agitated

  • Fast

  • Smart

  • Can almost always land on their feet during a fall

  • Loyal to their children

  • CUTE!

  • Soft and fluffy

  • Can be any color

  • Loves attention, doesn’t need constant attention

  • Likes attention, but alone time is good, too

  • Eyes can be any color

  • Sleeps most of the day

  • Can eat human food

  • Energetic

  • Hyper

  • Loyal to owners

  • Loving to owners

  • Cats can be left alone (with food and water) up to 36~48 hours if needed

  • Most short~haired cats do not need grooming and are completely capable of cleaning themselves

  • Easy to acquire, most breeds are quite cheap

  • Cats use their litterbox, no need to pick it up with your hands like dogs (ewwww)

  • Some breeds can be taught commands, tricks, fetch, and walk

  • Different breeds have unique characteristics, so this is fun

Cons of Cats

  • Likes to scratch furniture (if you don’t buy scratching posts)

  • You cannot close doors, they have to be able to access every room

  • Really energetic, (buy toys for entertainment or else your furniture will die)

  • Like to be up high (must train to keep off high places)

  • Can be moody and extremely picky, they tell you when to pet them and tell you when to stop

  • Cat food is more expensive than dog food, although cats are smaller than most dogs and would therefore eat less

  • If outdoors; cats will try to catch, and eat birds

  • Likes to be in small areas, especially boxes

  • Sheds tons of fur, especially long-haired cats like Persians and etc… A Sphynx has no fur, so if you’re too lazy and unwilling to have fur all over the place, get a Sphynx!

Pros of Dog

  • Dogs are great companions, as the quote says; “Dogs are a man’s best friend.”

  • Dogs come in many sizes

  • Faithful and loyal

  • Can be taught commands and tricks (like fetch)

  • Can eat human food

  • Can be any color

  • Eye color varies

  • Soft

  • Cuddly

  • Cute

  • Loves attention

  • Different breeds have their benefits, and so this is useful

  • Smart

  • Fast

  • Energetic (must be exercised)

  • Hyper

  • Strong

Cons of Dogs

  • Dogs can be pesky, they don’t leave you alone when you want them to

  • Dogs require exercise and mental stimulation, some dogs more than others

  • Without exercise, dogs can become very bored and destructive (beware furniture)

  • Dogs can be dangerous; biting, or knocking things over (including people)

  • Dogs are LOUD! They can bark, howl, and become a neighbor’s nuisance

  • Dogs can NEVER be left home alone for more than 8-12 hours or they become frantic and destructive

  • You have to pick up after them (feces)

  • Some breeds of dogs require regular hair brushing and trips to the groomer~which can prove expensive over time

  • Dogs who are not well socialized can be problems to other people, or other animals

  • It must be noted that some breeds are meant to hunt and kill

  • Dogs are often over~priced, especially by backyard breeders

  • Dogs are sometimes smarter than their owners…

  • To add on to being destructive, they can clear a whole table by just a simple tail wag

  • Strong, they sometimes are being really strong~destructive without meaning to be

And finally, whichever pet you want; a cat, dog, or BOTH, just do more research on the care it requires. Particularly for dogs it is important to do further breed research because while some dogs love to run, others need mental games, and others prefer to be couch potatoes. In fact; with dogs, temperament is far more important than size when it comes to picking the right one. The same kinda goes for cats, as well. Remember, treat your pets with care and love, and you will be happy with the results.
