WOMEN’S SOCCER: UNDERREPRESENTED AND NEEDS TO CHANGE
Soccer is the biggest sport in the world, played in almost every country. There’s something special about this sport that goes back literally thousands of years. But while we all like to cheer for our favorite players or participate in heated arguments over the best teams, it’s time to realize we are limiting ideas of soccer to half the world.
WHERE ARE THE LADIES???
Women’s soccer is not only underrepresented, but it rarely ever makes front-page headlines. For example, the women’s soccer team at Penn State just won, for the ninth time, the Big Ten tournament. Not many people know that, because it didn’t make big news.
WHAT YOU CAN DO
It’s important to realize the areas of growth in our society, especially the ones we don’t even know exist in the first place. The most played sport in the world can use some changing, but it’s all up to us. It has been played for thousands of years, but for most of that time, it’s been confined to only half of the population. Break that barrier by watching women’s soccer, picking a team to follow, finding a new favorite player, and spreading the word. People need to know that women’s sports deserve the same attention as everyone else, and it starts with you.
