Rocket Powered Car by Marcus Henry

The Bloodhound Super Sonic Car sounds like something from a comic book, just by the name. By the speed, too. It can go from 0-200 miles power in nine seconds. Its goal is to hit 1,000 miles per hour! Andy Green is an English Air Force commander, and the lucky guy who tested it for the very first time. He holds the record for breaking the sound barrier on land, that’s how fast the car is! Its massive engine is rocket-powered and uses a flame and fuel to propel itself. The car weighs five tons, which makes its speed record all the more impressive. “It was a real hard workout for the brakes. Probably up to somewhere close to a thousand degrees, the front brakes were smoking furiously after the second run. They just started to flicker with flame — very sort of Formula One, but in a proper high-speed car. And that was exactly what we were hoping for,” said Andy Green, the test driver.

A World Beyond Our Screens by Jane Bolton

“Around 2012, I noticed abrupt shifts in teen behaviors and emotional states.” Jean Twenge is a professor of psychology at San Diego State University who studies and writes books on the smartphone generation. “The gentle slopes of the line graphs became steep mountains and sheer cliffs, and many of the distinctive characteristics of the Millennial generation began to disappear.”

What caused these mountains and cliffs? Although we don’t know for sure, we do know that this abrupt shift happened in the year of 2012-- the year when over half the population owned a smartphone.

With smartphones, teens don’t feel the allure of independence and freedom as much as previous generations. “The shift is stunning: 12th-graders in 2015 were going out less often than eighth-graders did as recently as 2009.” says Professor Twenge in the Atlantic. The decline of teens getting together in person with their friends has also become more noticeable, dropping by 40% and continuing to decline steeply.

Along with this shift, driver's licenses and paid jobs have lost their attraction as well. The majority of teens in previous generations had their driver’s license by their senior year in highschool. Nowadays, many teens don’t get their license until the end of highschool after a good amount of nagging from their parents. Along with this decrease, less teens are searching for jobs because they don’t value the independence it brings as previous generations did. Simply put, smartphones are prolonging childhood. “Across a range of behaviors—drinking, dating, spending time unsupervised— 18-year-olds now act more like 15-year-olds used to, and 15-year-olds more like 13-year-olds. Childhood now stretches well into high school,” according to Professor Twenge.

As smartphone and social media usage increases, teens are at more risk of having health issues. Teens that spend more time on their smartphones are likely to suffer from sleep deprivation (less than 7 hours of sleep), more illness, and weight gain. “In just the four years from 2012 to 2015, 22 percent more teens failed to get seven hours of sleep.” reports Professor Twenge.

Teens who spend more time on their smartphones and social media are also more likely to have mental health issues. They tend to be unhappy and lonely, fall into depression and anxiety, and even commit suicide. “Eighth-graders who are heavy users of social media increase their risk of depression by 27 percent, while those who play sports, go to religious services, or even do homework more than the average teen cut their risk significantly,” according to Professor Twenge’s research. As depression increases, so does the risk of suicide.

Interestingly, some teens have started to link their problems and frustrations to the smartphone as well. Have you ever gotten together with your friends and tried to start up a conversation only to have them ignore you and keep texting on their phones? Has it happened with your family? Although we don’t need to abandon this new technology, we do need to realize that there is a world outside our smartphones. A world with people. A world that is so much bigger than our screens.

Flying Cars by Marcus Henry

What do you think when you hear the term ‘flying cars?’ Do you think way in the future, with hundreds of cars zooming around in the air, or do you just brush it off, and say, that’ll never happen. Well, it did! A company called AeroMobil has invented a true flying car. Its wings can fold back to drive on the ground, and when it needs to, it can take off! However, don’t get too excited. This flying car needs a runway to takeoff. Also, you need a pilot’s license to fly it in the air. And to top it all off, it costs anywhere from 1.3 to 1.6 million dollars. Not to mention gas! I have no doubt that soon in the future, there will be affordable flying cars.

Could Pokemon Sun and Moon be the last game before total reboot? By Roman Corl

There are a few different theories that point to Pokemon's next main series game, Pokemon Sun & Moon, being the final one in the series, but I think it's really just the final one before they literally start over again.

This could be supported by the fact that the game is seemingly throwing everything it can at the table to make this game completely different from all the others, including getting rid of gyms and doing constant callbacks to generation one by giving many of the original 151 Pokemon new forms. In fact, they just announced that the Day and Night system is making a return.

There's also the fact that the number of Pokemon is nearing 1,000 and just how impossible that might be to manage if the series just kept stacking. A 3D remake of the original Red and Blue/Green series just seems inevitable, especially since they already gave us a version of this with the Omega and Alpha series and the Heart Gold and Soul Silver games before it.

I very much so expect Sun and Moon to spell the end of this version of Pokemon.

iPhone X Released by Matthew Staniar

Apple is one of the biggest companies worldwide and has changed our world as we know it. Now with the newly introduced iPhone X, brand new never-seen-before technology is now able to fit in your pocket.

The first thing people will notice about the iPhone X is that the screen now extends along the whole phone similar to the phone’s competitor, the Samsung Note 8. And the well known iPhone home button is now gone. Many may ask, “If the home button is gone how will you get into the phone?” The answer is something that will make us feel like secret agents. Now the phone is able to recognize your face out of millions. All you have to do is look at the phone. It also has the ability to adapt to changes such as glasses or if you decide to grow a beard, and the phone will still know it’s you and will unlock. It also works just fine at night or in the dark.

Of course the typical improvements have been made, like an even better camera and more options for photography. Also a 2.7 million pixel screen has been added, so zooming and scrolling is as smooth as butter and the picture is better than ever.

Many Apple fans will be ready to get this phone with all of the upgrades, but the price reflects the cost of all the new improvements. Now selling at $1,000, it isn’t cheap, but for many it’s worth the cost.

With all of the new tech released with the iPhone X, some wonder what will Apple do next.

Anime Recommendations by Michelle Zhang

Whether you’re new to anime or have been watching anime for a while, here’s a list of some of my favorites that I’ve watched so far that are fairly short (help me...anime has taken over my life...by the way, my life is ruined):

Haikyuu: 3 seasons, 60 episodes. Haikyuu is a sports anime about volleyball. The matches are really stressful to watch but it’s really funny and enjoyable. It might be hard to remember all the players’ and teams’ names at first but it will end up making sense. What I like about Haikyuu is that it has character development for almost all of the characters, and that it’s presented very well. It is mostly told from Hinata Shouyou and Kageyama Tobio’s (two first-year students at Karasuno High School) points of view.

Kuroko no Basket: 3 seasons, 75 episodes. Kuroko no Basket, or Kuroko’s Basketball is another sports anime about basketball. It’s also super funny and you will love (mostly) all the characters. The abilities of the players is kind of over-exaggerated, but it makes the story more interesting.

Bungou Stray Dogs: 2 seasons, 24 episodes. Bungou Stray Dogs is about people with special abilities based off authors who are fighting for different groups! For example, Lucy Maud Montgomery (part of the group known as The Guild) has the ability of “Anne of Abyssal Red” which allows her to create an alternate reality known as Anne’s room. Chuuya Nakahara of the Port Mafia has an ability that allows him to manipulate gravity. All the characters’ abilities are based off the real-life authors they are named after.

Your Lie in April: 1 season, 22 episodes. Your Lie in April is so amazing. The animation and scenery is really stunning, and the soundtrack for the anime is also really great. It’s about a pianist named Arima Kousei, whose mother (a world class pianist) died and he struggles playing piano afterwards because it affects him mentally. He meets this violinist, whose name is Kaori Miyazono. You might cry at the end!

Blue Exorcist: 2 seasons, 37 episodes. Blue Exorcist is about a teenager named Rin Okumura, who one day finds out he is the son of Satan after when he his ability “awakens”, causing him to be able to see demons. Due to his power awakening, his father -- a priest -- becomes possessed by Satan, who wants to claim Rin back into the world of demons, Gehenna (Rin and his twin brother were adopted). His father kills himself in order to save Rin from Satan, and Rin vows to become an exorcist to defeat demons and Satan. But, because he is Satan’s spawn, many high-class exorcists are hunting for him, and he must keep his identity hidden, which tends to be difficult, because he has incredible strength and his body bursts into blue flames, which can kill people. He goes to the True Cross Academy, run by Mephisto Pheles (a clown in my opinion), to study exorcism. Blue Exorcist has a lot of plot twists and in my opinion, the first season was better than the second.

Owari No Seraph: 2 seasons, 24 episodes. Owari No Seraph, or Seraph of the End, is about a plague that took over the earth, killing everyone over the age of 13. Due to this, vampires emerge and capture human children. One day, these two orphans plot to escape the vampires and slay them. I won’t spoil anything else, but it can get kind of gory and it’s intense and the backstory gets really deep. Season two ends with a cliffhanger but the anime is continued in the manga!!

Guns N’ Roses in Hershey by Gabbi McVey

August 13, 2017 @7:00pm at Hershey Stadium, Guns N’ Roses comes for a concert a lot of people would love to go to!

The lead singer is Axl Rose, who became the lead singer in 1985. Slash has been the lead guitarist since 1985 (35 years)!  Rounding out the band are: Izzy Stradlin (rhythm guitarist), Duff McKagan (bassist), Steven Adler (drummer), Dizzy Reed & Melissa Reese (keyboardists), Richard Fortus (guitarist), and Frank Ferrer (drummer).

The band has made six studio albums and altogether 100 million records worldwide, including 45 million in the US alone, making them one of the top bands of all time.  The most popular songs are: “Sweet Child O’ Mine,” “Welcome To The Jungle,” “Paradise City,” “November Rain”(includes full orchestra), and “Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door”.

We have seen this band go through tough times; for example: when the concert got rained on during the 1993 Skin N’ Bones tour, and everyone left. But they also have seen the great moments like when they hit the 100 million records sold mark. That’s a huge thing for a band to get, because it takes a lot of dedication, practice, bad and amazing moments to know what to go for and to not go for.

When a band like Guns N’ Roses comes on a tour like the Not In This Lifetime tour, people see a band that has grown from an amateur band to one of the top bands; it’s an amazing thing because you have the gift and opportunity of seeing them grow immensely. Back then people used lighters for a concert like this, but now people will use the flashlight on their phone.

"She Helped Me" by Sadie Watson (Creative Excerpt)

As I sit covered in snow behind a frozen boulder trying to catch my breath, I can see them getting closer. They're stronger, faster, and have better weapons on them than we do. Our troops are out there giving it all they’ve got. They are fighting for the lives of all of our people, but are still dropping like flies.

I see someone I can shoot. I step out from the humongous piece of rock that is keeping me covered. For less than a fraction of a second, I feel shooting pain but I can't tell where it's coming from. I think it’s my back though I can’t quite be sure. Then everything goes black. I cannot feel or see anything but I can hear screaming. Little did I know it was me.

Suddenly all of my senses return and I feel warmth. I open my eyes, look back and see woman’s hands gently easing an arrow out of my back. Then she scoops me up into her arms and I look forward only to see the entrance of a building about 20 feet away. I start to hear murmurs from a familiar voice. I look up and it's her, it's Alli. Suddenly, I hit the ground hard like I had been dropped and feel the freezing cold of sitting in the snow once again. Then I black out.

Hours later, I wake up, feel the warmth of a bed, and see lovely blue sheets covering me. I look to my left and I see a beige wall. When I look to my right I see a familiar face staring back at me from the next bed over. Little did I know she wasn't really staring. Her eyes were open but she wasn't really all there. It was now only her body left in the bed beside me. No mind, no soul. Just a body. I had lost her, Alli. My best friend and my only friend, had died from an arrow through the heart, saving my life.

The Trouble with Modern Movies by Ben Abel

How did you like the new Avengers movie? Or have you seen King Kong: Skull Island? The budget for those movies goes something like this: Special effects budget: a billion dollars. Storyline budget: hold on, storyline? What storyline? You can’t mean the few lines of dialogue between the drawn-out slow motion battles with many explosions and unrealistic physics. That is what these so-called “blockbuster” movies have degraded to.

Just to be clear, what I most look for in a movie is plot. Acting and character development can also be important. I don’t rate movies by how good their special effects were or how many explosions they had. Maybe at the start of the Marvel series, there were some pretty good movies (I know that I liked them), but Civil War was way over the top. There was a plot, but it was mostly an excuse for the aforementioned “drawn-out slow motion battles with many explosions and unrealistic physics.” Civil War is not by any means the only movie guilty of this. Many recent blockbusters have so many explosions or CGI, you can hardly tell what is going on.

Fortunately, not all recent movies are like this simply because they do not have to be. Even action movies can avoid this phenomenon simply by creating an interesting or engaging plot that makes sense before they start the special effects.

Ready, Set, Start Anime! by Kirstiana Holes

Hello, I’m a professional Otaku and I’m here to guide you through the world of Anime. But be warned, the world of Anime can be a dark, dangerous place just as it can be wonderful. Hopefully, you’re reading this to learn about some good shows to watch if you’re new to Anime. If not, you can still witness the culture that is contained within this article. Let’s get to it.

First, we have Death Note. I’ll warn you, not all content on here may be suitable for some watchers. Death Note contains death as the title implies. Basically, the show is about a high school student, Light Yagami, who comes across a note book. The notebook contains pages that explain whoever’s name is written, they will die of a heart attack within 40 seconds prior to writing the name. Light Yagami, also known as Kira, starts killing people who he thinks deserve to die. These people aren’t the ones you’d think. At first, he only kills criminals or former criminals then, things get out of hand. As other nations start repenting to Kira, authoritative figures realize that something needs done. They call in the all famous investigator, L.

L is a crime investigator who has the desire to take down Kira and bring justice. Can Light really be defeated? What is the death note really capable of? If both believe what they are doing is right, who will prevail? Who has a stronger sense of justice? One can only figure this out by watching the show. Or by looking it up on the internet but that isn’t a good choice here. I don’t recommend doing so.

Coming up next next we have Sword Art Online. Protagonist Kazuto Kirigaya, more commonly known as Kirito is one of the first beta testers out of 100. SAO is a show about these virtual reality game players who have no escape out of the SAO platform. Upon the opening of the game Sword Art Online, people are told by the creator that they cannot leave. If they die in the game, they die in real life. If someone takes off their virtual reality headset in real life they die there too. The only way to escape is to win the game. In order to win, you must complete all 100 floors where you either have to battle other players or monsters. So, the question of the day is...do they win? And if they do, what will they have missed in the real world. If they stay, how will they survive? Will they ever be able to keep a real life here?

Okay, imagine. You’re at school minding your own business and suddenly you run into your classmate. Are you imagining? Alright, now picture that one of your classmates are asking to come home as her fiance. That’s just a little crazy, is it not? That’s what Kenji thought, and yet he went along with it anyways. Kenji Koiso is a mathematical genius. He’s entrusted to be a part time helper with keeping an entire virtual reality world together. Keep in mind that this is used nationally. This keeps the world together from power to phone calls. So, when Kenji is brought to his classmates home to celebrate her grandma's 90th birthday, things go wrong. The server is hacked and the world is in chaos. This story is great for showing how a family comes together in a time of crisis. But how do you work together with a family you don’t even know?

Seid ihr das essen? Nein, wir sind der Jager!

Translates to: Are you the food? No, we are the hunter.

If you are up to date with pop culture, you’ve probably seen or heard this at one time or another. This is the first two lines of the hit anime, Attack on Titan. Attack on Titan is about an army of these monsters called titans. The titans seem harmless until you see their massive size. And once you get used to that, they seem harmless again. Kinda like a giant totoro. Oh look, there’s the village in the wall Maria. If you look above, it’s not hard to see. There’s a titan peering over. Look at that, he broke down the wall. Now there are titans roaming the streets eating people. And you thought they were harmless. Well you thought wrong. Main protagonist, Eren Jaeger is the one thought to be the savior of humanity. He is a living weapon that can be used to defeat the titans. How though? How is it that a child can wipe out an army of monsters? And can the rest of his team trust him. LIkewise,  can they be trusted?

Well, it’s been real, it’s been fun, it hasn’t been real fun. I’m joking, I’m joking. Chill out and go watch one of these shows already. Don’t pretend that these were mundane because both you and I know that these shows sound better than what you’d find on television. Watch them and you won’t regret it. I know now that I regret my life choices as a writer.

GlobalXplorer Looks to Identify Looting of Archeological Sites by Marcus Henry

Now, with the latest in technology, you can do archaeology, from space-without leaving your room! A platformer called GlobalXplorer lets you access satellite footage from around Peru.  GlobalXplorer is campaigning to stop looting. Looting is bad and could damage artifacts. The program GlobalXplorer will show you how to spot looting, then will show you real satellite footage from just now. It will show you one tile at a time, and you will see if there is looting or not looting; looting is often marked by symmetrical patterns grouped together (like circles or mounds) indicating human activity. GlobalXplorer depends on people to mark sites both positively and negatively for looting.

So, if you’d like to be a “virtual” archaeologist, check the link below.

Koda, Pittsburgh's Dancing Polar Bear by Marcus Henry

At the Pittsburgh Zoo, onlookers watch in wonder at Koda, the zoo’s male polar bear, only 10 years old. He steps out of his cave, shakes his head repeatedly, then retreats back into his home. According to a newsela article I read, it is almost normal for polar bears in zoos to be doing this. It says that 85% of polar bears in zoos do random, repeating things. Laurel Braitman, the author of the book Animal Madness, says that repetitive acting like this is “a signpost of frustration”. In the Arctic, polar bears have thousands of miles they can travel. They might not like being cooped up in a zoo.

So, what is your opinion? Are polar bears in zoos going crazy? Or is it something else? Either way, polar bears in zoos are acting strange.

Planet Robobot Review by Elijah Albrecht

When this unusually titled, $40 game was released, it collected 96 5-star reviews [on Amazon alone] along the way. And I agree.

This 3DS game, besides taking an average of 5-6 hours to complete, is very similar in gameplay to the game before it, Kirby Triple Deluxe.

I give this robotic game 4.6 stars because of its short but sweet plot, and the actual gameplay is similar to Kirby Triple Deluxe.

Chromebooks...Helpful or Harmful? by Jason Chang

As technology is rushing towards us, schools are getting more digital than physical. The age of paper and pencil has shifted by the use of chromebooks in school. Chromebooks are a versatile type of laptop. They’re fairly cheap, and schools from 4th grade are now housing them! Light, collaborative, and time-saving, what could be wrong? However, even the technology with the greatest benefits can have awful, even devastating drawbacks! These upcoming facts may tip the scale of this argument.

Chromebooks, as I said before, are not expensive. Most schools will probably be able to afford one per student. They save time, have effective battery usage, and are easily portable! Chromebooks have effectively changed the course of learning. Papers and binders are easily transforming into easily accessible, google drive files!

But Chromebooks can also shift environments in sly, yet disasterly ways. Chromebook usage can limit face-to-face conversation, when students faces are stuck to a blaring screen. Like all screens, screen staring can be painful, and may result in light to very serious effects. Also, though not too often, students can send and have sent mean or inappropriate messages through social providers like Gmail. And almost everybody, myself included, have been guilty of gaming during class. Sure, class may be boring, and I get that, but gaming when you could be learning is just hurting yourself!

On the flipside, let’s not forget that Chromebooks do provide an effective method of online communication, both at home and at school. Talking with teachers and students online can be more effective than face-to-face conversation, as this doesn’t involve you marching to their face. And through google drive, nearly unlimited data can be stored on your Chromebook, compared to a heavy binder stocked with papers!

Unfortunately, because of the fact that these are not expensive, these bucketheads can’t store applications. Chrome is the only Internet browser, and I know of some kids who struggle with Chrome’s properties. They aren’t too flexible, and they lack customization and individuality.

In addition, Chromebooks are fairly fragile. A couple drops, and it’s pretty much gone. The fine won’t make you bankrupt, but it’s not a pretty price to pay.

So what do you think? I’m not favoring any side so far, Chromebooks seem to have equally beneficial and harmful status. Should schools ban Chromebooks, or will schools allow Chromebooks to create a digital world outside the classroom? Enjoyed reading this? Smash that Like and leave your thoughts down below if you would like!

Star Wars Rogue One by Ellen Held

A new Star Wars movie  is coming up, although it is slightly different than the rest of the Star Wars movies . This movie, being subtitled “A Star Wars Story,”  is taking a bit of a trip back to the past, back to nineteen years after the Galactic Empire was formed.

As just about any Star Wars fan knows, the first movie A New Hope starts off with a battle in space. The purpose of this particular battle is for the Empire to reclaim the Death Star plans that was stolen from them. Later in the film, while preparing for the battle between the Death Star and the Rebel pilots, it is mentioned that a lot of Rebel soldiers lost their lives to get those plans. Rogue One shows viewers the rebel’s mission to steal the plans for the Death Star.

This film introduces almost all new characters, save a few such as Mon Mothma and Darth Vader.  James Earl Jones will be voicing Darth Vader once again and Genevieve O'Reilly will be returning to again play Mon Mothma as she did in Star wars - Revenge of the Sith. The character that the new movie is mostly centered around is Jyn Erso played by Felicity Jones. The movie will be released December 16,  2016.

Nissan’s New Self-driving… Chairs? By Ben Abel

So you’ve heard of self-driving cars and you’re amazed? How about chairs? The ProPilot chair is a robotic chair that moves on a fixed path without any input from the rider. Based on the technology used in Nissan’s ProPilot cars, the chair is made for people in lines. It detects the chair ahead to prevent collisions. A weight sensor installed inside can tell when the user of the chair in the front stands up and then the chair moves to the back of the line. Nissan is now asking stores to test their product.

The ProPilot chairs are not the first automated chairs that Nissan has manufactured. In the past, Nissan has made a self-parking office chair. So maybe this is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to self-driving chairs.

Nintendo’s Secretive New Console: the NX by Ben Abel

Nintendo is coming out with a new console. It was announced in April 2016 to be released in March 2017. But in May, VRWorld suggested that it would be out during the Tokyo Games Show, which started on September 15.

Apparently, the NX will be a hybrid console, both mobile and able to connect to a TV. It is expected that the controller will have the same screen-in-the-middle layout as a Wii U Gamepad. Different reports have put the screen’s length at 205 millimeters and five to seven inches. What does NX stand for, anyway? It is suspected that the N is for Nintendo and X is for fusion. But no one really knows. All we know is it will be revolutionary. So, if you’re a gamer, get ready for the next big thing!
